Doctor Who': A Companion To The Fourth Doctor | Anglophenia | BBC ...
src: images.amcnetworks.com

The Fourth Doctor is the incarnation of the Doctor, the protagonist of the BBC science fiction science series Doctor Who . He is portrayed by Tom Baker for seven consecutive seasons, which remains the longest term of office of any actor to portray the lead, counting both the classic and modern series. He is considered the most recognizable and iconic incarnation of Doctors both in England and internationally.

In the series's narrative, the Doctor is a strange, centuries-old Lord of the Gallifrey planet who travels in time and space in his TARDIS, often with friends. When the Doctor is seriously injured, he can regenerate his body, changing his physical appearance and personality in the process. Baker describes the fourth incarnation, a strange and sometimes brooding individual whose extraordinary personal warmth is sometimes forged by his capacity for right anger. Her first friend was a brave journalist Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen), who had traveled with her in her previous incarnation, and she later joined the surgeon Harry Sullivan (Ian Marter). His friends later included a K-9 robot dog, a wild alien warrior Leela (Louise Jameson), Time Lady Romana (Mary Tamm and Lalla Ward), teenage alien aristocrat Nyssa (Sarah Sutton), adolescent genius Adric (Matthew Waterhouse) Australian officer Tegan (Janet Fielding).

Overview

The Fourth Doctor appeared in 172 episodes (179, calculated regeneration in Planet of the Spiders and canceled Shada ) over a period of seven years, from 1974 to 1981. It made him a doctor the longest on the series screen. She also appeared on Specials of The Five Doctors (through the recording of the incomplete Shada ) and made her last appearance as a Doctor in a special charity Dimension in Time (apart from a series of television commercials in New Zealand in 1997). Tom Baker appeared on his 50th anniversary specifically as a curator of the mystery.

This incarnation is generally regarded as the best known by the Doctors and one of the most popular, especially in the United States. In a poll by Doctor Who Magazine, Tom Baker has lost the "Best Doctor" category only three times: once to Sylvester McCoy (the Seventh Doctor) in 1990, and twice to David Tennant (Doctor Tenth) in 2006 and 2009. The eccentric style of dressing and speech of the Fourth Doctor - especially his long scarf and his love for Baby Jelly - made him an easily recognizable figure and he quickly captivated the public imagination. Producer Philip Hinchcliffe has often stated that the appearance of Bohemian Doctor Fourth and anti-establishment views appeal to older students and college students. The Fourth Doctor's time enjoyed a significant increase in viewing figures, averaging between 8 and 10 million viewers in just the first year (20-25 percent of all viewers watching in the UK). In 1979, the average figure between 9 and 11 million, rose as high as 16.1 million for the last episode of the City of Death (though this was during the ITV technician strike of 1979 which means the BBC is the only broadcaster on air for several weeks).

There are also novels and audio dramas featuring the Fourth Doctor. Two early audio playbacks featuring Tom Baker voiced the Fourth Doctor's date from Baker's television because he mainly refused to appear in further audio playback since leaving the series. In 2009, however, it was announced that the new five-part series will be produced by BBC Audio (see below).

Biography

After contracting radiation poisoning from the planet Metaluris 3 crystal, the Third Doctor returned to the UNIT headquarters in TARDIS, where Lord K'Anpo Rimpoche's Time helped him in regeneration ( Planet of the Spider ).

In his new incarnation, the Doctor was eager to leave Earth for exploration, thus recalling ongoing involvement with UNIT (by which he worked closely as a Third Doctor). He's also tired of working for Gentlemen of Time. Despite his efforts to avoid it altogether, Time Lords continues to send him on occasional missions, including attempts to prevent the creation of Daleks ( Genesis Daleks ), where he also meets with Davros. The Doctor traveled with journalist Sarah Jane Smith, who had become her best friend before her regeneration, and, for a while, with UNIT Surgeon-Lieutenant Harry Sullivan.

After the battle with Zygons in Scotland, Harry (after spending the entire season with the Doctor as they tried to get back to TARDIS) decided that the train ride was safer than TARDIS, which Doctor and Sarah chose to try to make a promise in London. Instead they end up on planet Zeta Minor ( Planet of Evil ), located at the far end of the known universe. From this point on to Doctor and Sarah traveling alone.

Doctor's friendship with Sarah Jane ended when she received a telepathic call to Gallifrey, because humans were not allowed into the planet. The call turned out to be part of the trap set by his Master's enemy. The timing of an apostate God has used all his regeneration and has turned into a little more than a shriveled skeleton. The Doctor was framed for the murder of President of the High Council of Time, and on trial. To avoid execution, the Doctor invokes an obscure law and declares himself a candidate for the office, giving himself the time he needs to prove that he is innocent and expose the real culprit. This eventually resulted in a climax battle with the Master ( The Deadly Assassin ).

The Doctor was seen traveling alone for the first time, returning to the planet he had visited centuries before. During his previous visit, he accidentally instilled his own thoughts on the powerful computer of a human colony computer, Xoanon, leaving him with multiple personalities. On his second visit, the Doctor is now remembered as an evil deity by the descendants of the colonists, some of whom have become tribal warriors called Sevateem. After the Doctor healed the computer, one of Sevateem, Leela, joined him on his journey ( Crime Face ). The Doctor brings intelligent but uneducated Leela to many places in human history, teaching him about the science and past of his own species. In London Victoria, the couple meets the magician Li Hsien Chang and his master, the personal Weng-Chiang ( The Talons of Weng-Chiang ). Weng-Chiang is revealed to be a time-brave hunter from the distant future of the Earth.

Then, Doctor and Leela visit the Bi-Al Foundation medical center, where they get the K-9 ( The Invisible Enemy) robot dog. While K-9 does not work, time distortion brings TARDIS back to contemporary rural England. While investigating the distortions, he and Leela are confronted by ancient creatures that eat death from Time Lord history, called Fendahl ( Fendahl Picture ). Finally, the Doctor returns to Gallifrey and declares himself as Mr. President, based on the elections held during his previous visit. This is actually a tactic for revealing and defeating the Vardan invasion plan, which led to the unforeseen consequences of leaving Gallifrey open to being attacked by the Samani people ( The Invasion of Time ). After that Leela and K-9 decide to stay at Gallifrey. The doctor consoled himself by producing K-9 Mark II.

Shortly after, the ruling White Guardian assigned Doctors to find six segments of Key to Time, sending a young Lady Time named Romana (as played by Mary Tamm) to help her. Both Gallifreyans travel to various planets, meet strange and unusual allies and enemies, collect six segments and defeat the equally powerful Black Guardian, who seeks the Key for himself. After the conclusion of the quest, Romana regenerates into a new form (described by Lalla Ward) ( Destiny of the Daleks ).

In an effort to avoid the Black Guardian, the Doctor put a "Randomizer" on TARDIS so that even the Black Guardian could not anticipate where they were going. Ironically, the first place Randomiser sends them is the origin planet Daleks, Skaro ( Fate of Daleks ). Perhaps because of this, Doctors began to often over-ride machines, first traveling to Paris for a holiday, just to get caught up in an alien scheme to steal the Mona Lisa ( The City of Death ). He ends up throwing the device altogether, remarking that he's fed up with not knowing where he's going.

Shortly after this, the Fourth Doctor and Romana were projected beyond the known universe and into the negative coordinate universe, known as Exo-Space. TARDIS landed on a planet called Alzerius ( Full Circle ), where they joined a young prodigy named Adric. In E-Space, Doctors destroy the giant vampire races that once threatened life in the universe. Finally, the Doctor and his two friends find themselves in a white void without coordinates, a kind of membrane between the two universes. An exit immediately formed, but Romana and K-9 chose to stay behind to help free the race of the enslaved creatures in E-Space (Warriors' Gate ).

The Doctor and Adric had just returned when they were asked to help Traken people from a creature known as "Melkur." At Traken, Adric and Doctors were introduced to the Nyssa of the Aristocratic Traken. Both Nyssa and his father, Tremas, assisted the Doctor in stopping Melkur, who was actually revealed to be another TARDIS controlled by Master. The Teacher narrowly lost, but managed to take over Trema's body, thus giving himself a new incarnation.

Doctors decided to travel to Earth to scan the real Police Box as part of a plan to improve the "Chameleon Circuit", a mechanism of change in TARDIS. However, the Doctor immediately noticed a mysterious ghost figure who looked at him in the distance. He eventually confronts the figure, who warns him about the dangers of the future.

As the doctor prepares to travel to Planet Logopolis to get a fixed Chameleon Circuit, Tegan Jovanka appears in the console room (having previously lost in the TARDIS corridor). The channel between E-Space and our own universe is revealed to be a Charged Vacuum Emboitment (CVE) created by mathematicians from Logopolis as part of the system to enable the Universe to continue past its hot dead point. Nyssa appears, explaining that she was taken to Logopolis by the same figure that the Doctor met. Logopolis was immediately under Master's control, but the field of stasis that he produced eventually released Entropy and eroded matter throughout the universe, threatening to destroy the entire universe.

The Master agrees to help Doctors stop the spread of Entropy by adapting the Pharos Project radio telescope on Earth so they can reopen the CVEs. However, as the Teacher tried to control it, the Doctor ran out under the reverse radio plates to disconnect the cables connecting the Master to the CVEs. The Master made the dish begin to spin so that the Doctor would fall to his death. Before he fell, he managed to tear the cable, just to let his friends watch while clinging to the cable. When his grip began to slip, he saw visions of all the enemies he faced for years, then fell. Adric, Nyssa, and Tegan gather around the Doctor who was badly wounded and called his name. The doctor began to see the visions of all his colleagues and even Brigadier called his name.

He then looks at the three of them and utters his last words: "This is the end - but now it has been prepared for..." He then moves to the figure of the white-dressed Watcher, who is approaching the Doctor. The Watcher, the manifestation of the Doctor's future incarnation, merges with the Doctor and triggers his regeneration. "He is a Doctor all the time," Nyssa commented, when the three men watched him turn into the Fifth Doctor.

The Fourth Doctor reappeared on the 20th anniversary of the The Five Doctors . An apostate When God attempted to draw the first five incarnations of the Doctor from time to time, inadvertently trapped the Fourth Doc (and Romana) in the "eddy time" from which they were later released. The Fourth Doc also has a small cameo at the beginning of the Dimension in Time, warning of the Third, Fifth, Sixth and Seventh incarnations that Rani has to watch out for. The short holographic clip of the Fourth Doctor appears in "The Next Doctor" and "The Eleventh Hour".

In the fiftieth anniversary of the special, "The Day of the Doctor" (2013), the Fourth Doctor reappears in the clip because the past and future incarnations unite to help save Gallifrey. Tom Baker also appeared in the final scene of the episode, as a curator of the mysterious elderly museum that appears right after the Eleventh Physician declared he wanted to hold this job someday. He alluded to his resemblance to the Fourth Doctor by talking about revisiting the "old favorite" face and hints that he might as well or has become a Doctor.

Personality

To the extent, the Fourth Doctor was one of the most unexpected in terms of his emotional depth, a little farther and stranger than his previous incarnations.

Despite the obvious moments of strange charm and offbeat humor, accompanied by manic smiles, the Fourth Doctor is more aloof and somber than his earlier incarnations. He can be very thoughtful, serious and even callous. He also features a dark side to his personality, and in The Invasion of Time he seems to mock cruelly and play with Time Lord after his emergency inauguration as President. He also has a strong moral code, such as when he faces the dilemma of whether to destroy Daleks in Dalia Genesis, stating that if he did, he would not be better than Daleks. He was absolutely shocked by the actions of the Pirate Captain on the Pirate Planet and refused to listen to Professor Tryst's attempts to justify drugs to finance his scientific work (Nightmare of Eden ) , just tell him to go.

At the same time, he was able to feel true warmth. In the Ark in Space , he salutes the inability of the human race, and then the story establishes that Earth is his favorite planet ( The Stones of Blood ). He was the first Doctor to call his friends his best friend.

To his friends, especially Sarah Jane Smith, she is protective and somewhat like a father figure. In stories such as the Mars Pyramid, he worries that he is approaching middle age with an almost melancholy fatigue (something that is the main focus of his personality in his final season). He often reflects on the status of his outsider for both humanity and his Gallifreyan heritage, as he seems to be more inclined towards a solitary existence ( The Deadly Assassin ). In contrast to this "outsider existence" he emphasized that he had found mankind as his "favorite species", as if he were studying it scientifically. He can also be angry with people he considers foolish, reckless, misguided, or evil. When it takes over, it can be considered authoritative to the point of control and egocentric. He usually retained his distance from Time Lords, commenting on the Pyramids of Mars, while out of Gallifrey, he did not consider himself Lord of Time. He clearly hates that, even after lifting his exile, Time Lord keeps calling Doctors whenever they deem it necessary ( Genesis Daleks ).

Although, like all his other incarnations, he prefers brain to muscle, he is a capable swordsman (Android Tara ) and fighter when it comes to dictating, following from his predecessor's self-defense skills. He improvises non-lethal weapons when necessary ( Genesis Daleks ) but also does not reject the more deadly weapons as a necessity against living and non-sentient beings, such as DeMat Gun that destroys matter ( The Invasion of Time ) or contemporary firearms ( Fendahl and The Talons of Weng-Chiang ).

One of the most significant relations of the Doctor occurred during his fourth incarnation and further explored in his tenth incarnation. Her friendship with Sarah Jane Smith implied deeper than her relationship with other friends until then (as mentioned in the Tenth Doctor's episode of "School Reunion"). He is consequently still strongly influenced by their separation years later in his personal time line.

The Fourth Doctor also has a desire for baby jelly.

Appearance

Extremely tall, with eyes that seem perplexingly perplexing, the mass of curls for clearly displayed hair and teeth, Doctors love clothes that usually consist of shirts, vests, cravats, trousers, skirt coats (with a bag of seemingly endless pockets ). a seemingly useless array of items that would be in line with the purpose of the Doctor when used), wide-brimmed hat and, most famously, his long, impractical long scarf, apparently knit for him by Madame Nostradamus (whom he calls "small knit the smart "). When it broke down in the Ark in Space, the Doctor declared with regret that it was "irreplaceable."

According to Baker, the Doctor's scarf is the idea of costume designer James Acheson. Acheson, knowing little about knitting, purchasing large quantities of wool colors, and commissioned Begonia Pope, a friend of his, to create colorful designs. He started using all the wool provided, producing a very long, but iconic accessory.

Producer Philip Hinchcliffe has a wardrobe that makes three different coats for Baker to wear depending on the type of story, the first being a reddish-brown blazer she wore during her first season; two other (dark-colored full-length) coats (for darker horror stories) and light gray (for more action-packed stories). The Wardrobe Department also provides a broad-brown fedora hat. The rest is often picked from his own clothes (such as ties, trousers and vests). Wider and brighter scarves debuted with Baker's fourth season and a light brown coat was introduced at the end of his fifth season. Baker also appeared in the Sherlock Holmes-inspired costume at The Talons of Weng-Chiang.

According to both the show creator and Baker, the character's appearance was originally based on paintings and posters by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec from his friend Aristide Bruant, a singer and nightclub owner whose trademark is a black robe and long red scarf.

When John Nathan-Turner became an event producer at Baker last year, the Fourth Doc was the first to wear a garment dotted with a question mark as a motif, in this case, above the points on his collar. The costumes are completely redesigned, changing the focus of the color from brown to red. Designer June Hudson later revealed in an interview that Nathan-Turner had even given him permission to remove the scarf at all if he wanted it. Hudson chose to save the scarf, because it is a very iconic iconic part.

Story styles

The early stories of the Fourth Doctor are characterized by a strong "Gothic Horror" theme. The writer/scriptwriter duo Robert Holmes and producer Philip Hinchcliffe consciously tap into horror icons such as the mummy (Pyramid Mars) and Frankenstein ( Morbius Brain , Robot ), Jekyll and Hyde ( Planet of Evil ), and even transforms ( Ark in Space, Morning Grief ) and various themes like alien abductions. In these stories, they are given science fiction, not typical magic.

The Hinchcliffe Era (1974-1977) is one of the most controversial in the classic series, the increasing element of horror and violent depictions attracted many criticisms of Mary Whitehouse, who previously attacked the Barry Letts era for series such as Terror from Autons . The controversy led by the Director-General of the BBC to apologize to Whitehouse for ending one episode of The Seeds of Doom (1976). Hinchcliffe was transferred to the target drama Target in 1977 at the end of his third year. Graham Williams - who has developed Target - was brought in to take over as producer for Baker's fourth season.

Williams was given special instructions to lighten the tone of the story, thus playing for the power of Baker. However, the first three stories (directed at the previous style) have been assigned. Robert Holmes has agreed to continue editing it, but he eventually left after only doing the first two, Horror Fang Rock and The Invisible Enemy. The editing task of Pictures Fendahl falls to his successor Anthony Read. The season has just finished. With players and crew who suffer from fatigue and lack of resources, the end of the Invasion of Time season is largely completed based on it having been written to capitalize on pre-existing sets, props, and costumes.

For their second season, Williams and Read have planned a thorough storyline that will last throughout the season. With more editorial control, it was also decided that the authors would emphasize the elements of fantasy and humor. Holmes wrote the first story, The Ribos Operation , and the team of authors from Bob Baker and Dave Martin handled what would be the last story of the season, The Armageddon Factor . Douglas Adams wrote the second story, The Pirate Planet , while another newcomer, David Fisher, wrote the third and fourth stories. Again, difficulties begin to emerge when the fifth story fails. Robert Holmes agrees to write what will become The Power of Kroll .

Williams's third and final year at the event was regarded as a high point in terms of rank and story for the entire series. But it proved more difficult for Williams behind the scenes, as he found Tom Baker increasingly difficult to overcome. The most watched episode of Doctor Who is part 4 of the City of Death (by Fisher, Adams, and Williams) which attracts 16.1 million people. Douglas Adams became a script editor and his trademark style can be seen in dialogue and stories. For example, at Destiny of Daleks , Adams enters the scene of the Doctor who is trapped under a large rock resembling a similar scene in the second series of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. His time as script editor was troubled; Adams often end up having to edit and rewrite the story. Again, facing exhaustion and lack of funds, Adams finally agreed to write the last story Shada . Production proved difficult and ultimately was not completed due to a strike on the BBC. Williams left the show, dissatisfied for abandoning what he regarded as a low note.

In Season 18, John Nathan-Turner became a series producer. He instituted a number of changes to the show, including reducing humor and introducing more science fiction concepts. During this season, the Fourth Doctor became very weak and, at times, melancholy. Baker started the season with poor health, even though he finally recovered. Both the actor and his character look older and tired, because of Tuber's gaunt appearance and gray hair. Baker has found the role more difficult and more difficult to maintain and the previous season has been very draining. Many of the stories of this season also have a sad tone of rhymes, with entropy and decay being a recurring theme.

The new manuscript editor Christopher Bidmead found himself confronted with a serious problem from the beginning of his time on the show. He finally considers the many stories he left behind by Adams unusable, being too close to humor-driven stories of the previous season. The only one he uses is The Leisure Hive , even after editing it. Bidmead asked a pair of writing companions to come up with what would be the second story of the season, Meglos , which was eventually regarded as one of the weakest events in the series's history up to that time..

Bidmead is just beginning to gain momentum with the fifth story, Warriors' Gate . This story is famous for the Doctor's dark mood and death wishes, as well as the surprising nature of the story of adults. Real elements, even like dreams, such as time shifting and walking through the mirror, also get some difference stories. At the urging of John Nathan-Turner, the Master was brought back. This is done by Bidmead converting criminals in The Keeper of Traken to Master.

The overall theme of decay reaches its conclusion in Baker Logopolis's recent story, written by Bidmead in private. This story is very gloomy, sometimes even bleak. The theme of decay and death is constant in the story, personified in the Ghost Watcher, effectively a sign of the 'death' of the Fourth Doctor.

The Doctor's Stories Four saw fewer enemies recurring (or returning) than in previous eras. Daleks only appears twice and Cybermen has only one story, Revenge of the Cybermen . The UNIT, which has been featured in most of the Third Doctor's adventures, appears only in the four early Doctors of the Fourth, playing a minor role in its last appearance, Season 13 of the Seeds of Doom where no regular UNIT staff appeared.

At the same time, stories like The Deadly Assassin build most of the mythology that surrounds the Time Lords and home planet Doctor Gallifrey and it will remain a major feature for the rest of the classic series and still be felt in the series being revived. For example, it was determined that Time Lords only had a limited amount of regeneration, which was the driving plot point in the Mawdryn Undead The Five Doctors The Trial of a Time Lord , television movies of 1996 and Christmas 2013 special "The Time of the Doctor".

Similar flashbacks appear in the story of The Sarah Jane Adventures Death of the Doctor . In "The Name of the Doctor," he was briefly seen by Clara Oswald roaming around TARDIS (clip taken from The Invasion of Time ). He is also seen as an echo walking past Clara in the eleventh Doctor's flow of time at the end of "The Name of the Doctor." The archive image is used for his performance on "The Day of the Doctor". He was also briefly seen during the exposition of Missy of the Twelfth Doctor's fight against android assassins ("The Witch's Familiar").
