Indie pop (also set as indie-pop or indiepop ) is a music genre and subculture that combines guitar pop with DIY ethics as opposed to style and mainstream pop music tones. It originated in post-punk England in the late 1970s and later produced fanzine, labels, and clubs and a gigging circuit that developed. Compared to its counterpart, indie rock, this genre is more melodic, less abrasive, and relatively anxious-free. In subsequent years, the definition of indie pop has also branched out to also mean bands of DIY scenes/movements that are not related to pop tendencies. Subgenres include pop space and twee pop.

Origin and etymology

Both indie and indie pop originally referred to the same thing during the late 1970s. Inspired more by DIY punk rock ethos than style, guitar bands were formed on the premise of then-novels that one can record and release their own music rather than having to get a record deal from a major label. According to Emily Dolan, indie is based on distorted music from Velvet Underground, "rebel screams" from the early punk, and "some more strange and eccentric rock figures", such as Jonathan Richman.
