Indie pop (also set as indie-pop or indiepop ) is a music genre and subculture that combines guitar pop with DIY ethics as opposed to style and mainstream pop music tones. It originated in post-punk England in the late 1970s and later produced fanzine, labels, and clubs and a gigging circuit that developed. Compared to its counterpart, indie rock, this genre is more melodic, less abrasive, and relatively anxious-free. In subsequent years, the definition of indie pop has also branched out to also mean bands of DIY scenes/movements that are not related to pop tendencies. Subgenres include pop space and twee pop.

Development and characteristics

Origin and etymology

Both indie and indie pop originally referred to the same thing during the late 1970s. Inspired more by DIY punk rock ethos than style, guitar bands were formed on the premise of then-novels that one can record and release their own music rather than having to get a record deal from a major label. According to Emily Dolan, indie is based on distorted music from Velvet Underground, "rebel screams" from the early punk, and "some more strange and eccentric rock figures", such as Jonathan Richman. Pitchfork ' s Nitsuh Abebe identifies the majority of indies as "all about the 60's style guitar jing".

Indie pop is an unprecedented contrast from the rough and serious tones of the previous underground rock style, as well as being a departure from the glamor of contemporary pop music. Distinguished from the anxiety and ferocity of its indie rock counterparts, the majority of indie pop borrows not only the quality of stripped punk, but also the "sweetness and mainstream pop attraction". Music critic Simon Reynolds says that indie pop defines itself against "pop charting". Abebe explains:

One is the idea that rock music should be cool - 'cool' which means sexy, tough, artistic, fiery or fantastic.... The charts are already 'cool' closed - these kids, in their basements and rooms, are trying to make a mirror image of it, a pop world in which they star.... and a few raspberries blown in the larger music world, which (naturally) goes right to prefer something more interesting than the average white boys playing simple pop songs.

Simon Reynolds says that "what we now know as indie music was created in Scotland," with reference to the emergence of Postcard Records in 1979. However, some have argued that the concept of indie music did not crystallize until the late 1980s and early 1990s.. American pop indie pop album Beat Happening in 1985 was also very influential in the development of indie pop sound, especially in North America. In the early 1990s, British indie pop was influenced and branched into various styles. The US, which did not have many scenes in the 1980s, had many indie pop fans in the mid-1990s. Most of the modern ideas of indie music come from the 1986 C86 compilation , which garnered many guitar bands inspired by psychedelic early garage rock sounds of the year 1960s.

The names used by indie pop fans are popcids and popcakes and for the music they listen to, O! P , twee , anorak and C86 . Abebe said that the Scottish group Pastel symbolized the 'anorak' hips' edge: The lazy melody, the lethargic strum, and the naive attitude of turning the rock band idea into something casual, intimate, and free of cool pretensions.

Dispute significance C86

Everett True, a writer for NME in the 1980s, believes that C86 is not a major factor behind indie pop, arguing that Sarah Records is more responsible for staying on sound, and that: "C86 actually does not exist as sound, or style... I find it strange, bordering on the surreal, that people start using it as yet another description". Geoff Taylor, a member of the Age of Chance band, added: "We never consider ourselves part of any scene, I'm not sure that the public is generally doing well, honestly We were just an independent band around at the time. with others. "

Bob Stanley, a Melody Maker journalist in the late 1980s and founding member of the pop band Saint Etienne, admitted that participants at the time reacted to lazy labeling, but insisted that they shared the approach: "Of course" Like any scene, almost nothing. Like Marxist clashes, groups with much in common build small rivalries. The June Brides and Jasmine Minks are the biggest names in the Alan McGee Living Room Club and can not bear to see each other. Only when Jesus and Mary Chain explode and steal their double-headed crowns, they realize that they are essentially a soul mate. Hunters Manic Street Preachers Nicky Wire recalls that it was the band's independence that gave the scene coherence: "People do everything themselves - make their own notes, do artwork, stick their sleeves together, release them and send them out, fanzines music loses interest very quickly. "

Many of the C86 bands actually distance themselves from the scene cultivated around them by the British music press - in his time, C86 became a derogatory term for association with so-called "Shambling "(John Peel-coined description celebrates the primitive self-conscious approach of some music) and underachievement.
