Paul Edward Haggis (born March 10, 1953) is a Canadian screenwriter, film producer, and film and television director. He is best known as screenwriter and producer for Best Picture Oscar winners in a row: Million Dollar Baby 2004 and Crash (2005), the last of which he also directed. She is the creator of the TV series Due South and co-creator Walker, Texas Ranger. She is a two-time Academy Award winner, two-time Emmy Award winner, and a seven-time Gemini Award winner.

Paul Edward Haggis was born in London, Ontario, Mary Yvonne's son ( nÃÆ'Â © e Metcalf) and Ted Haggis, an Olympic fast runner. She grew up as a Catholic, but thought she was an atheist in early adulthood. The Gallery Theater in London is owned by her parents, and Haggis gets the experience on the ground through work in the theater.

Haggis attends St. Thomas More Elementary School, and after being inspired by Alfred Hitchcock and Jean-Luc Godard, went on to study art at H. B. Beal Secondary School. After seeing the movie Michelangelo Antonioni in 1966 Blowup, he went to England with the goal of becoming a fashion photographer. Haggis then returned to Canada to continue his studies in cinematography at Fanshawe College. In 1975, Haggis moved to Los Angeles, California, to begin his writing career in the entertainment industry.

Careers

Haggis began working as a writer for television programs, including The Love Boat One Day at a Time, Diff'rent Strokes , and Facts of Life . With The Facts of Life , Haggis also earned his first credit as a producer. During the 1980s and 1990s, Haggis wrote for the television series including thirteen years, The Tracey Ullman Show , FM , Due South , LA Legal , and EZ Streets . She helped create the television series Walker, Texas Ranger; Family Law ; and Because South . Haggis served as executive producer of the series Michael Hayes and Family Law .

She received recognition in the film industry for her work on the 2004 film Million Dollar Baby, which Allmovie described as a "serious milestone" for writers/producers, and as "her first profile release to in feature movie ". Haggis has read two stories written by Jerry Boyd, a boxing trainer who writes under the name F.X. Toole.

Haggis then acquired the rights to the story, and expanded it into a scenario for Million Dollar Baby . Clint Eastwood plays the main character in the film. Eastwood also directs the film, and uses scenarios written by Haggis. Million Dollar Baby received four Academy Awards including an Academy Award for Best Picture.

After Million Dollar Baby , Haggis worked on the 2004 film Crash . Haggis spawned a story for his own movie, then wrote and directed the film, which allowed him more control over his work. Accident is his first experience as a major film director. Very positive on the release, Crash's critical reception was polarized, though Roger Ebert called it the best film of 2005.

Crash received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture and Best Director, in addition to four other Academy Award nominations. Haggis received two Academy Awards for the film: Best Picture (as the producer), and Best Writing for his work in the scenario. With Million Dollar Baby and then Crash, Haggis became the first person to write Best Picture Oscar-winners in two consecutive years.

Haggis says that he wrote Crash for bust liberals, arguing that his liberal fellow is not honest with themselves about the nature of race and racism because they believe that most of the racial issues have been settled in American society..

Personal life

Haggis lives in Santa Monica, California. She has three daughters from her first marriage with Diana Gettas and one son from her second marriage to Deborah Rennard.

Haggis founded the non-profit organization Artists for Peace and Justice to help poor youths in Haiti. In an interview with Dan Rather, Haggis mentioned that he was an atheist.

Sexually mistaken accusations

On January 5, 2018, Haggis was accused of sex offenses including several rape. He faces a civil lawsuit over this charge.

Public break from Church of Scientology

After maintaining an active membership in the Church of Scientology for 35 years, Haggis left the organization in October 2009. He was motivated to leave Scientology in reaction to a statement made by the San Diego branch of the Church of Scientology to support Proposition 8, a voting initiative banning same-sex marriage in California.

Haggis wrote to Thomas Davis, a spokesman for the Church, and requested that he denounce these statements; when Davis remained silent, Haggis replied that "Silence is consent, Tommy, I refuse to agree." Haggis went on to list other complaints against Scientology, including his termination policy, and the blurring of his former members through the leaking of their personal details.

The Observer commented on the defection of Haggis and actor Jason Beghe of Scientology, "Beghe and Haggis's decision to quit Scientology seems to have caused the PR movement's recent greatest difficulty, not least because of its reliance on Hollywood figures as source of income for the most expensive courses and advertising for religion. "

In an interview with Movieline , Haggis was asked about the similarity between his Next Sunday and his departure from the Scientology organization; Haggis replied, "I think a person's life is always parallel to art and art aligned with life." In February 2011, The New Yorker published a 25,000-word story, "The Apostate," by Lawrence Wright, detailing Haggis's allegations about the Church of Scientology. The article concludes by quoting Haggis: "I was in a sect for thirty-four years, everyone can see it, I do not know why I can not." Haggis was interviewed as part of a group of former Scientologists for the 2015 film Going Clear: Scientology and Prison of Confidence .
