The fourth generation iPad (marketed as iPad with Retina display , colloquially referred to as iPad 4 ) is a tablet computer manufactured and marketed by Apple Inc. Compared to its predecessor, the third generation iPad, the fourth-generation iPad retains the Retina Display but features new and improved components such as the Apple A6X chip and Lightning connector, introduced on September 12, 2012. It ships with iOS 6.0, which provides a platform for audio-visual media including electronic books, magazines, movies, music, computer games, presentations and web content. Like the iPad 2 and the third generation iPad, has been supported by five major iOS releases, in this case iOS 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. iOS 11, released on September 19, 2017, has no support for fourth generation iPad due to limitations hardware.

The fourth-generation iPad ships with iOS 6.0 and later, iOS 7. It can act as a hotspot with multiple operators, share its Internet connection over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB, and also access the Apple App Store, a digital distribution platform app for iOS. This service allows users to browse and download apps from the iTunes Store developed with Xcode and the iOS SDK and published through Apple. The high-powered USB port found in computers and newer accessories provides full charging capability. Apple claims that the battery can provide up to 10 hours of video, audio playback, or web surfing on Wi-Fi, 9 hours of web surfing via cellular connection, or one month on standby. Like other rechargeable batteries, iPad batteries lose capacity over time. However, iPad battery can not be replaced by the user. In a program similar to the iPod and iPhone battery replacement program, Apple promised to replace iPads that have no electric charge with updated units for a fee. During the battery replacement process, user data is not stored/moved, and the repaired or updated units are equipped with new casing. Warranty on updated units may vary between jurisdictions.
Accessories
Smart Cover, introduced with the iPad 2, is a screen protector magnetically attached to the iPad's face. The cover has three folds allowing it to be converted into a cradle, also held together by a magnet. Smart Cover can also take another position by folding it. Smart Covers have a microfiber pad cleansing the front of the iPad, and wakes the unit when the cover is removed. It comes in five colors both polyurethane and leather which is more expensive.
Apple offers several other accessories, most of which are adapters for the exclusive Lightning connector, the only port in addition to the headphone jack. The dock holds the iPad at an angle, and has a dock connector and an audio line-out port. The iPad can use a Bluetooth keyboard that also works with Mac and PC. The iPad can be charged by a standalone power adapter ("charger") compatible with iPod and iPhone, and a 12-watt charger is included.
Reception
The fourth-generation iPad received excellent reviews from critics and commentators. The reviews by Gareth Beavis from TechRadar praised the device for high resolution Retina Display, which TechRadar wrote was "... one of the most impressive we've seen on tablets to date. "However, reviewers also wrote that the screen" does not have a 'punch' seen on the Super AMOLED screen that is seen on devices like the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. " This review also praised the iPad interface because of its simple design and easy-to-use layout. A series of benchmark tests conducted on graphics performance from fourth generation iPad by Anandtech resulted in the device achieving the highest score compared to other consumer mobile devices, including Samsung Galaxy S III, Nexus 10 and third generation iPad. The fourth generation iPad's performance improvements vary between tests, but improvements are still evident. Furthermore, the battery longevity test performed by the same organization shows that the fourth generation iPad battery lasts longer than its predecessor. However, the updated iPad 2 battery lasts longer than the fourth generation iPad.
Commercial revenue
On the first weekend of sales of iPad Mini and iPad fourth generation, Apple reported that they sold a total of 3 million units. TechRadar notes that the first weekend sales figures for fourth-generation iPads are lower than the corresponding numbers for third-generation iPads, which sold 3 million units on their first weekend. Such further reports and analyzes from David Hsieh, a technology analyst, show that the iPad mini sells better than the fourth-generation iPad.
