Plot

A Jewish aristocrat, Judah Ben-Hur and his foster brother, Messala, are good friends even though their origin is different. While riding a horse, Ben-Hur is injured and Messala takes him back to their family home in Jerusalem. Regardless of the hospitality of Ben Hur's mother, Naomi and Tirzah's sister's affection, Messala felt alienated in her adoptive family. He enlists in the Roman army and fights in the war of the Roman Empire in Germany. Ben-Hur also develops feelings for Esther's family slaves even though their different stations in life force him not to pursue them. But when his father, Simonides, attempted to marry him to a Roman, Judah proclaimed his love for him and made him his wife.

Three years later, Messala returned as a decorated Roman officer. His return coincided with the rising insurgency by the Zealots, who opposed the oppressive nature of the Roman government. Judah treats and houses a young Zealot named Dismas. Messala reunited with Ben-Hur and tried to convince his adoptive brother to serve as an informant. After a reunion dinner with Ben-Hur and his family, Messala informs them that a new Roman governor, Pontius Pilate will stay in Jerusalem and no incident should happen.

A few days later, Pontius Pilate marched to Jerusalem with Ben-Hur and his family watched from the balcony. Dismas tried to kill Pilate with a bow but failed. In retaliation, the Romans stormed Ben-Hur's household and arrested him and his family. Rather than betraying his fellow Jews, Ben-Hur took responsibility for the assassination attempt and was sentenced to slavery aboard. His mother and sister were punished for crucifixion. Ben-Hur and Messala fall with both hate each other because they feel betrayed. While heading to the kitchen, Ben-Hur meets Jesus, who fetches him water.

Ben-Hur survived five years of slavery as a rower on a Roman ship under the command of Quintus Arius. During the sea battle against the Greek rebels in the Ionian Sea, Ben-Hur's workshop is on board. The drummer presses the slaves to row, but the galai collides with another ship and is destroyed because Ben-Hur managed to cling to a floating pole. He was washed ashore and found by Sheik Ilderim, who recognized him as a runaway slave. Ben-Hur managed to convince the Ilderim not to leave it to the Romans by treating one of Nubian's race horses. After Ben-Hur develops a bond with four racehorse, the grateful Ilderim then trains Ben-Hur to become a train driver.

Ben-Hur and Sheik Ilderim then traveled to Jerusalem to take part in the grand chariot race at the newly built Roman circus. Jesus' preaching ministry caught the attention of governor Pilate and Messala, who is now the commander of the Roman garrison and a warship champion. While visiting Jerusalem, Ben-Hur meets Esther, who has become a follower of Jesus and is involved in charitable activities. Esther tells Ben-Hur that his mother and sister have died, and despite their reunion, both remain emotionally separated for his new cause against the insistence of Judah to seek revenge against Messala.

Ben-Hur then faces Messala alone in their former home but is forced to flee when the Roman army appears. After the Romans executed twenty Jews in retaliation, Esther completely lost to Ben-Hur. Sheik Ilderim instructed Ben-Hur in a racing train technique. Later, Ben-Hur meets a former Roman soldier named Druses, who tells him that his mother, Naomi, and Tirza's sister are still alive. However, their reunions deteriorate when Ben-Hur finds his mother and sister suffering from leprosy, which also seems to have lost his memory.

Sheik Ilderim bribes Pilate to allow Ben-Hur to compete by proposing high stakes. Esther tries to convince Messala not to race for Ben-Hur, but she insists that she will win. On the day of the race, Ben-Hur follows the Ilderim's instructions to refrain from racing until the last lap. Using dirty tactics, Messala managed to defeat the other rival coachmen. After a brutal and exhausting race, Ben-Hur wins the race. Messala survived but was badly injured and lost legs. The Ben-Hur victory courts the Jewish audience and generates dividends for the Ilderim.

Despite his victory, Ben-Hur is desperate about his family and his former friend Messala. Later, Esther witnessed the capture of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. Ben-Hur and Esther watched the wounded and beaten Jesus forced to carry his cross through the streets. Reflecting his first encounter with Jesus, Ben-Hur tries to offer Jesus water but is beaten by a Roman soldier. After the crucifixion of Jesus, a rainstorm occurred. Naomi and Tirzah were miraculously healed by rainwater containing the blood of Jesus, and Sheik Ilderim paid a ransom to free them.

In 2013, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer obtained the Keith R. Clarke script, an adaptation of Lew Wallace's 1880 novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ , which is in the public domain.

In April 2014, Paramount Pictures and MGM announced that they will produce a new version of Ben-Hur , based on the novel, with Mark Burnett and Roma Downey respectively as executive producers and producers. MGM has previously released two films based on books, 1925 silent films and the more famous 1959 film of the same name. The rights to the last film were sold to Ted Turner in the 1980s. MGM has just emerged from bankruptcy due to the global success of James Bond's twenty-third film, Skyfall, and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, both of which resulted more than $ 1 billion at worldwide box offices, including over $ 300 million in the United States and Canada, while Paramount did well at the time with the biblical story of Noah. John Ridley ( 12 Years a Slave ) was hired to revise the script, with Sean Daniel, Burnett, and Joni Levin bound to produce, and production executives Downey, Clarke, and Jason Brown. Duncan Henderson then sticks to produce, with John Ridley also producing executives. It was announced that the new film would be different from the 1959 version, and dealing with the formative relationship of Ben-Hur and Messala grew as friends, before the Roman Empire took over Jerusalem, and that Christ would have a prominent role.

In September 2013, East Bekmambetov was hired to direct the film. Bekmambetov was initially reluctant to direct and did not want to deal with films whose predecessors had such a huge impact. After producer Sean Daniel persuaded him to read the manuscript, he accepted it, saying "I read the script, and suddenly I understand this story is not what I expect it is not a remake, that is the interpretation of the famous book." He said the story of Ben-Hur reminded him of Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet and Anton Chekhov. He was fascinated by the 1959 film but finding focus on revenge rather than forgiveness became a major issue; this is the main difference between the 1959 book and the 1959 movie: it was written about forgiveness, and the film is about revenge and miracles. Therefore, he wants to emphasize themes of forgiveness and love rather than vengeance. He found "the most important values of pride, competition, power, power, dictatorship of power and self-love" that stands out in the Roman Empire are the main subjects in this version. He says that this film is not just a Ben-Hur story, but a sharing story about him and his brother, Messala. Bekmambetov is aware of the comparisons made with previous classical adaptation films, and hence feel the need to make films very different from the others. As a result, he decided to make a realistic drama movie rather than a large tent-pole attraction. The director did not intend to make a more ancient version of the past, as he did with Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter ; he wants to make a more reasonable and real movie.

Producer Mark Burnett stated that movies like Ben-Hur , which center on the beliefs and messages of Jesus Christ, need to feel like epic summer movies epic to attract younger and more secular audiences. He explained that part of what caused the budget - $ 100 million - is the special effects and 3D experience that young viewers expect. MGM finances 80% of its production costs, while the remaining 20% is covered by Paramount.

In June 2015, Rob Moore, vice chairman of Paramount, explained that this version was not a remake of the 1959 movie, but a new interpretation of Lew Wallace's novel that became the basis.

Write

John Ridley rewrote the script based on the original scenario by Keith Clarke, which itself was based on Lew Wallace's novel in 1880 Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ . Ridley marveled at how Clarke returned to the source material and focused on the subject of slavery and racial colonization, and the deep connection between the two friends. He is more interested in the project because it deals with faith themes in a very "powerful" way. The studio approached him in October 2013, after he wrote the screenplay for 12 Years a Slave , which then won an Oscar the following year. The studio wanted him to make "a production-related polish by simply sharpening the story and making it filmable."

Casting

Tom Hiddleston was originally considered for the title role, Judah Ben-Hur. Jack Huston is then cast in place. On September 11, Morgan Freeman was added to the player to play Sheik Ilderim, the man who taught Ben-Hur to become the champion of the racecourse. On September 18, sources confirmed that Toby Kebbell was in preliminary talk to play the villain, Messala. On October 15, Gal Gadot is in talks to join the film as Esther, the slave with whom Ben-Hur falls in love. Pedro Pascal of the Game of Thrones TV series is in talks to play Pontius Pilate. On October 30, TheWrap confirmed that Gadot negotiations with Paramount and MGM had ended, and the actress had been withdrawn, reportedly due to scheduling a conflict with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice . On November 4th, Marwan Kenzari was added to the cast as Druses, a Roman captain. On November 11th, Ayelet Zurer was negotiating to play Naomi, the mother of Judah Ben-Hur (Miriam in book and adaptation 1959). On Nov. 13, Olivia Cooke is being considered for Tirza, Ben-Hur's sister. On December 2, Nazanin Boniadi was confirmed as an actress who will portray Esther. On 12 January 2015, Sofia Black D'Elia served as Ben-Hur's sister, Tirza. On January 13, Rodrigo Santoro was announced as Jesus. On January 20, MoisÃÆ'® s Arias was added to the players to play Gestas, a Jewish Jewish fanatic who was desperate to fight for freedom, after his family was killed by the Romans. On January 21, Pilou AsbÃÆ'Â|k was chosen as Pontius Pilate, replacing Pascal for the role.

Primary photography

On February 2nd, 2015, MGM and Paramount Pictures announced that major photography had begun and that, like the original film, the shoot would take place mostly in Italy, particularly in Rome and Matera. The Sassi di Matera in Basilicata and CinecittÃÆ' studios in Rome are also selected among the movie settings. In many ways, CGI is widely used. However, Bekmambetov wants to rely more on practical effects and try to do as little CGI as possible in times when it is not badly needed.

Producers Roma Downey and Mark Burnett chose Matera as the location for Jerusalem, one of the same locations where Mel Gibson's bibliograph was filmed. The exterior shoot took place for two months, and was completed in early April 2015. Production was later moved to CinecittÃÆ' Studios, where the interior shooting lasted for four months, including the train scene, among others. About 2,000 extra is used throughout the movie.

In March 2016, Adam Sidman, a colleague from Timur Bekmambetov, sent a request to the Coastal Land Management Bureau in Palm Springs, which oversees federal land in the Coachella Valley area, asking if the team can fire a horse scene in Painted Canyon, which is outside the Box Canyon Road, with two horses, several cameras, and a film crew of about 30. His application was rejected, and Sidman thought it was due to the size of the production. He then tried to negotiate again, but to no avail. He then contacted the executive director of the Greater Palm Springs Film Alliance office, Levi Vincent, to investigate the matter. For Vincent, it almost seemed like the rejection was based on an arbitrary reason. With the help of local MPs, they can convince the BLM to approve the request, but this time with a greatly reduced production of 8 crew members, no horses, and unmanned drone use than handheld cameras.

Chariot race sequence

The famous racecourse sequence, which runs about 10 minutes, is almost exactly the same as in the previous film, originally planned to be filmed in the Circus Maximus arena in Rome; However, producers were denied access by Italian national cultural authorities because of fears that the action would damage the fragile historic site, which was in recovery at the time. The filming location has been approved by local officials, as well as the mayor of Rome, Ignazio Marino, who regrets the decision to deny access to producers, saying, "The city administration's goal is not so much to increase revenue in exchange for the use of public space but to give back Rome's role as an international device great, that is in our history and tradition. "According to sources obtained by The Guardian, the decision to ban Ben-Hur from filming was due to" technical "issues. Although no official reason is given, archaeologists speculate that the inclusion of heavy film vehicles and hundreds of additions to the arena could cause untold damage to the site. However, Italian culture minister, Dario Franceschini, declined to comment. As a result, the producers were forced to film scenes in CinecittÃÆ' Studios, where many original films were also taken. It is unclear whether the filmmakers had planned to use the site for a major train race, which should have taken place in Antioch, or if they planned to shoot one of the previous races that Judah Ben-Hur took part in while he was still living in Rome. Bekmambetov, however, calls the stadium size too large for shooting as the reason.

The entire race is planned before, in some iterations of storyboard and video animation previsualization. To recreate the sequence, the producer and expert of the horse racing track built a 1,000-foot arena, with tracks of 250 meters long and 50 meters, standing, and a gate, called the Tiberius Circus, at CinecittÃÆ' World, an amusement park theme park about 45 minutes in the south of Rome. It was built partly behind many former studio studios Dino De Laurentiis. According to production designer Naomi Shohan, the design of the arena is composed of circus archaeological records in Roman territory. One sixth of the arena is built physically and the rest is added to the movie by computer graphics. Unique Chariots are also built based on the original reference. A total of 86 horses were supplied by horse master Steve Dent, with spare animals, and trained for several months, to be able to race at 40 miles per hour. Dent has collected bigger horses for films like Ridley Scott Robin Hood (2010), but says that "this is more of a worried job." There are 60 handlers for the horses, and 12 horses are installed for every four horse carts, so the animals will have a chance to rest. In contrast to the train in the 1959 version, made by Italian craftsmen and weighing 900 pounds, this time the team wanted to use the equivalent of a Ferrari - small and fast. Some trains are made for each character - some with brakes (though the horse is strong enough to beat the brakes), some with space for a second "blind driver" or a 'bonnet-fitted' camera, some with different sized wheels for filming at turns instead of straight , and some to flip or crash. Massimo Pauletto, art director of the build-up of the train, said that his team had to rediscover forgotten skills, "from sketches, no one understands how they can become real," and the hardest part is tailoring practical needs together. and special effects needs. The problem was cut from day to day because the bolts holding the horse-drawn carriage were marred by horses because of their incredible strength, and the bars that stuck to the horses were bent. As a result, the crew must learn how to create a new one week after week.

To capture the rumbling atmosphere of the race, the film crew put a microphone onto the horse to record the sound of nail-jerking sounds, and GoPro cameras were buried in the sand. The cameras are also planted on trains and people, one of which is placed on a soccer ball in the middle of the track while the horses run on it. Huston and Kebbell spent two and a half months preparing and training to learn how to ride a horse-drawn carriage in Italy six days a week. It takes time for the stuntmen to learn to drive them, and they are only called for a very dangerous action. But overall, it is the actor on the chariot. A total of 20 horse carriages are used. Most of the scenes are performed using real concrete action, without CGI help, and digital models are only used when filming is too dangerous. About 400 additions are used as spectators (which are then upgraded to about 100,000 with special effects). Bekmambetov's goal is to shoot this action scene so realistically that the audience feels that they are in the train and drive it. He was inspired by YouTube videos and Instagram photos, "The camerawork is very specific when we see NASCAR or motorcycle racing on YouTube. It's either a camera's close-up, highly professional, or iPhone camera from people in the crowd, cars passing at the speed of light and they barely have a chance to shift and grab something. "

Phil Neilson, who served as action coordinator for the film, has previously worked in many films, including Ridley Scott Gladiator. Jonathan Stamp, a historian who has consulted the HBO/BBC series Roma , suggested on the design of a cable car carriage. He noted that the train in the 1959 film was an unrealistic decoration. Movie making for this special scene lasts 45 days in a span of three months. The inspiration for minimal CGI usage for this sequence comes from Hardcore Henry , where Bekmambetov is a producer. Accidents are done with computer image. The two main actors do their own journeys, without danger.

Huston and Kebbell were asked if they wanted to cast a replacement for their part, and they refused.

A stuntman was thrown from the train during filming, but only suffered minor injuries. However, a stuntman was thrown from a train and crushed by another wheel. She was later admitted to hospital and treated for her bruised ribs. Bekmambetov said the original Roman costume, with leather straps around the chest's chest, prevented the injury from getting worse - although Daniel noted that every driver wore Kevlar under his costume.

All harness and control are made of nylon webbing. For a carefully written spill, a large rubber mat is placed under a pile of sand to break the fall. The horses wore leather boots to make sure their back nails did not wrap their forelegs and gouged the pieces of meat at close range.

Release

Ben-Hur was originally scheduled to be released in the United States and Canada on February 26, 2016, but Paramount moved its release date to August 12, 2016. According to Variety , the decision to switch from February to August may be due to studio confidence in the summer being the best time to release epic tongkut. In CinemaCon 2016, Paramount announced it would relocate its release date to August 19, 2016, and schedule Florence Foster Jenkins for August 12, when Pete's Dragon , Sausage Party , and Anthropoid are also scheduled to be released. The film was released in the usual 2D format, IMAX, 3D, 3D Digital, RealD 3D and IMAX 3D. It was released in the UK and Ireland on September 7th.

Deadline Hollywood called August the prime time for the studio, having witnessed success with the release of Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles during August. In addition, the site highlights that the 2016 Summer Olympics will be an ideal platform for studios to promote the film, and that mid-August has proven to be the last point of time in the summer for a movie to generate huge amounts of revenue, before weekend box office shows down from Labor Day holiday and so on. Ben-Hur is the third summer tent of 2016 from Paramount Pictures, following Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the shadows (June 3) and Star Trek Beyond (July 22). It was the last major budget release of the summer film season.

Ben-Hur was released in Malaysia on September 15, 2016. The launch of the film was a controversy, when some viewers complained that scenes depicting Jesus Christ had been cut from the Malaysian theater version. Chairman of the Malaysian Film Censorship Board, Datuk Abdul Halim Abdul Hamid, explained that the Malaysian censors did not cut scenes depicting Jesus from the film, but suggested that the film producers cut some scenes to adjust the sensitivity of certain markets. Malaysian film distributor, United International Pictures Malaysia, has confirmed that deductions are made to meet local legal requirements and guidelines.

Marketing

Two exclusive photos of this movie were released by USA Today on March 14, 2016. On March 15th, Entertainment Tonight released the exclusive world premiere of several railroad scenes, and the following day , the first official trailer was released online, along with teaser posters.

Although Paramount did not secure the Super Bowl commercial venue for the film, Scott Mendelson of Forbes thought it was the right movie to advertise before Sony Pictures' based on the faith of the Miracle of Heaven March 16th. The trailer collects polarized reception from critics and viewers, with comparisons made for 300: Rise of an Empire , Gladiator , and Spartacus: Blood and Sand . In the first week, the trailer was seen over 8.2 million times on YouTube and Facebook, making it the fourth most viewed footage of the week. The trailer is also screened in front of more than 30,000 people at the Hillsong Conference 2016.

Reception

box office

Ben-Hur was called by Hollywood observers as the biggest box office bomb in the summer, and one of the largest by 2016. The film grossed $ 26.4 million in the United States and Canada and $ 67.7 million in to $ 94.1 million worldwide, against a production budget of $ 100 million. Due to its poor performance at the box office, rival studio executives believe the film lost about $ 100-120 million theatrically. Sources close to the film, however, believe the possible final loss of $ 60-75 million, noting the film can do well on DVD and other home entertainment platforms. Losses for MGM are heavier, as they finance 80% of the total production budget, including marketing costs. As a result, the most important part of the loss is about $ 13 million. The sources in the competitor's studio put the break-even point of the film about $ 250 million globally.

The Hollywood Reporter put Ben-Hur among the biggest summer box office risks of 2016, while Forbes < summer ". In the United States and Canada, the film is projected to be around $ 15 million on its opening weekend, a disappointing figure given the $ 100 million production cost. Due to negative reception from critics and heavy competition, reopening schools after the summer holidays, and the final weekend of the Rio Summer Olympics, the opening expectations of the movie were lowered as the opening approached. It opened Friday, August 19, 2016, at around 3,300 screens at 3,084 theaters, and earned $ 4.1 million, including $ 900,000 made from Thursday's preview of 2,389 theaters. The film went on to gross $ 11.2 million low on its opening weekend, even with 3D and IMAX bumps, finishing sixth at the box office and third among new releases, behind Kubo and Two Strings and Dog War . The film opened the demographics of the weekend was 51% women vs 49% of men, with 94% of the total audience coming over the age of 25.

Many box office critics and publications consider the film a box office bomb based on its opening. Jeff Bock, a box office analyst with Exhibitor Relations, called it a "summer bomb." Critics point out that the lack of star power, August release dates, competition, negative reviews (both from critics and viewers), and lack of marketing, are a potential cause for poor movie performance. According to Variety , this film can not be extended beyond its Christian audience. This is done well in more religious US areas, but does not do so in more secular areas of the country. As a result of the opening of the disaster, Ben-Hur merged with other films set in ancient times to perform poorly at the box office, especially the latest big films from the big studio - Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014), The Legend of Hercules (2014), and the Egyptian God (2016).

Ben-Hur is heavily dependent on overseas markets, especially in offshore Christian areas, such as Latin America, to break even and to cover its production budget (including marketing costs). Outside North America, Ben-Hur earned $ 10.7 million on its opening weekend of 23 international markets (18 regions released by Paramount and 5 by MGM). It has No. 1 openings in certain markets like Mexico, Philippines, India, Peru, Russia, France, and Bulgaria. Its top openings are in Mexico (2.7 million), Russia ($ 2.3 million), Brazil ($ 2.2 million), the United States ($ 1.5 million), France ($ 1.2 million), and Spain ($ 1.1 million). In the UK and Ireland, the film earned £ 265,000 on Wednesday and Thursday, previewed and through Sunday, and has a total opening of Ã, £ 1.05 million from 509 theaters. It debuted in second place behind the Sausage Party animation, after a fierce competition from the horror film Do Not Breathe for second place. Minus preview, it generates Ã, Â £ 783,000 from Friday through Sunday alone, which puts the movie at number five on the chart.

It opened in South Korea on September 14, and resulted in a powerful 5-day opening valued at $ 6.69 million from 707 theaters. It finished in first place among Hollywood movies (front of The Magnificent Seven), and is in second place overall behind the local film The Age of Shadows . Despite falling to second place on the second weekend, he managed to fend off newcomers The Magnificent Seven and I Am a Hero, and earned a total of $ 8.8 million there. Opened in China - the second largest movie market in the world - on October 10, and generated $ 2.51 million on its opening weekend. However, this reflects a total of seven days when it opened on Monday. From Friday to Sunday alone, the total is only $ 460,000, successfully debuting at number ten.

In terms of total revenue, South Korea ($ 8.8 million), Mexico ($ 6 million), and Brazil ($ 5.5 million) are the top markets. The opening date of the film in its last market, Japan, is February 8, 2017.

Critical response

Ben-Hur generally received negative reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes the film has a 25% approval rating based on 167 reviews with an average rating of 4.6/10. The site's important consensus reads, "How do you counter ideas? By making too few remake films, and try to cover it with editing and choppy CGI. " At Metacritic, the film has a score of 38 out of 100 based on 34 critics, showing "generally poor reviews". Viewers surveyed by CinemaScore gave this movie an average rating of "A-" on a scale of A to F.

The A.V. Club Ignatiy Vishnevetsky, giving one of the few positive angled reviews, writes: "At first, the new adaptation of New Testament soap opera Lew Wallace seems impersonal, as dusty and decorated as a movie wherever the cloaked Jews and Romans argue about gods and kings with a vague English accent [,] "but as time passes," Ben-Hur announces itself as a sort of re-enactment of elements from sources materials that no one in their right mind would ever expect. "Scott Collura gave the movie 5.8/10, writing:" Ben-Hur ' is an adequate introduction to the classic story of revenge and forgiveness, but it's uneven, the antagonist character of Toby Kebbell often exceeds the appeal of Jack Huston's hero, a more religious element of the not-so-good story with pieces of action, and the many players left behind by them own movies. But still, no one denies Ben-Hur's ultimate redemptive power. This is not a very smooth ride there. "

Stephen Holden wrote, "Overseen by an unknown director for a human touch and lacks a name star, except Mr. Freeman, Ben-Hur Stephen Holden ' feels like a movie made cheaply, though it looks expensive. "Richard Roeper gave the film two stars out of four, writes:" Ben-Hur is struggling to find an identity and never really get there. "Good-faith efforts to achieve faith-based revivals are being undermined by the ordinary sequences of PG-13 action." The Hollywood Reporter ' s Todd McCarthy describes the horse cart race scene as "very digital and overly edited", calling it the worst scene in the movie he describes as "Lost, lost and hopeless in everything."

Rolling Stone labeled the movie "A Remake Disaster of Biblical Proportions." Empire is summarized as "Passable for most, but unfortunately not competent in place."

Sister Rose Pacette wrote positive reviews for the National Catholic Reporter , only objecting to the anachronistic costume worn by the Jewish women in the film.
