History

In the early 1950s, Melbourne entrepreneur, Isador Magid, imported a rotary head extruder from the United States that was initially malfunctioning. After issuing a technical expert from the United States as well as receiving valuable suggestions from CSIRO, Magid started producing Twisties. The product was popular but the large-scale distribution was difficult so Magid decided to sell the machine and brand in 1955 to Monty Lea from Darrell Lea for £ 12,000. Monty and her brother, Harris, experimented with the machine further using rice and various flavors. Twisties became popular in Australia - part of its initial success was attributed to promotional activities that included advertising on TV shows Graham Kennedy and Bert Newton In Melbourne Tonight, making it one of the earliest products advertised on the program. After unsuccessful attempts to launch Twisties in the UK and competition for storage space in Australia, the Lea brothers agreed to sell the Twisties brand to Smith's Snackfood Company.

Twisties are produced by feeding a mixture of milled corn, rice, wheat and water into a machine known as a rotary head or a random extruder. This machine cooks the mixture at high temperature and pressure while forming the pieces. This process produces a distinctive Twisties shape with a knobbly surface and a squiggly shape. Once formed, the pieces are roasted before flavored with a layer of herbs and vegetable oil.

During the late 1990s the Twisties brand underwent a brand overhaul, coinciding with the acquisition of The Smith's Snackfood Company by Frito-Lay. As long as the brand remodel the appearance of the package is transformed into a more modern look, adopting the current logo. In addition to this, the snack texture itself is altered, resulting in finer finishing.

Twisties were originally only available in 'Cheese' flavors, but the taste of 'Chicken' and 'Wicked Cheddar Zig-Zag' were later introduced and became a standard part of the product line. There are also diverse overseas flavors such as 'Toffee', 'Tomato', 'Salmon Teriyaki' and 'Fairy Fairy', where local tastes are best suited for them.

Flavors

Twisties has a wide variety of flavors sold in Australia, and on different islands. This is the main taste of 'Cheese' and 'Chicken', which is found in any country that sells it. These islands have a more varied selection of flavors that are normally available, but Australia is experiencing a more limited taste of the edition. This is because The Smith's Snackfood Company aims to "[revive] consumer love for the Twisties brand," according to senior company marketing director Jenni Dill.

Twisties has been advertised since its last brand reshuffle in the late 90s with the notorious slogan "Live pretty straight without..." In the English-speaking Oceanic countries where the Western language is not well understood, the slogan is "Fun life with... "Ordinary television commercials play on the slogan by showing people in worldly situations that are transported into a surreal and interesting environment when they eat Twisties. Twisties is claimed to be the "number one extruded snack brand" by Smith's.

Twisties, as well as other snack brands owned by The Smith's Snackfood Company, formerly including Tazos (pog-like collectible discs) in specially marked packages for consumers to collect. Tazos has appeared in many themes over the years, such as Yu-Gi-Oh !, The Simpsons and other popular franchises. This can be attributed to the success of Twisties.

Ads for snacks almost completely stopped in the last decade compared to his past promotions. The largest (and most expensive) Twisties campaign ever existed between 1982-1983 with the "Twisties jumper" campaign. Lillian Darrell, previously unknown actor, plays the role of an old lady knitting Twisties jumper straight from a sheep. This promotion includes free knitting patterns and free Twisties handbags. Other promotions are tried after that, but they produce little success. Currently, Twisties rely heavily on limited edition flavors to keep the hype at a favorable level.

International variant

Twisties in New Zealand are drastically different from Australian varieties in terms of package design, marketing and the shape of the curl cheese itself. Called 'twisties [sic]', they are produced by Bluebird Foods and are only available in cheese flavors. This package has a penguin mascot that will throw cheese like a ball, and has a completely different slogan compared to its Australian counterpart: "It is a straight world without Twisties!" They are less dense than Australian varieties, and their shape is more tubular and curved without imperfections in shape (Australian Twisties are more jagged and detailed). In New Zealand, Australian varieties are not widely available.

Twisties are also sold in the Italian market under the name ' Fonzies' . Fonzies are pale yellow, because they do not use the bright orange dye used by Twisties. In addition to this, they are more easily chewed because they are roasted, unlike the fried Australian inspiration. Their flavor cheese is very similar to that used in Oceania varieties with the name 'Twisties', lighter and less prone to clump together during consumption, and with a more natural cheese flavor. The only qualities that distinguish it from the variety are the egg-like taste of the first bite, even though it is discharged after continued consumption. This is done through the same rotary extraction technique as in all other localizations, although snacks are much smaller than those found in Australia, more attached to the common thin form than the thin and fat snack choices. The aroma is much sharper, too. Fonzies are available in 'Gli Originali' ('Original') flavors, as well as 'Time Out', 'Choco', 'Hot Passion', 'Bacon', 'Hot Chili', and more.

  • The ingredients for Fonzies are as follows, in order of product percentage: corn grits 62.2%, palm oil, 6% cheese powder, whey powder, salt, flavor, baking powder, yeast extract, flavor enhancer (E621, E627, E631), lactose (from milk), the smell of smoke.

Although sold in Italy, Fonzies is manufactured in Germany by LU Snack Foods GmbH. In GCC countries, they are also sold under the name "Fonzies", produced by Kraft Malaysia.
