History
The arena opened on 17 February 1978 as the Halifax Metro Center, and was built on the ground to offset the steep heights of the land it occupied. One can see cars on the road surface, outside, while watching the show.
In the last few years there has been talk of the possibility of a bigger new arena to be built in the next few years. It will probably have a seating capacity of over 15,000 for hockey games. In December 2007, Ozzy Osbourne's concert sold out within nine minutes, setting a box office ticket record for Halifax Metro Center. In July 2008, the Halifax Metro Center also set a sales record (25,000 tickets sold in forty minutes), for two Elton John back-to-back concerts held in late September 2008. In April 2012, Halifax Mooseheads sold out 6 games from the Hockey Major Junior Hockey League semi-final in 20 minutes. On May 9, 2013, the QMJHL Game 5 President Cup Final was sold out within 11 minutes, setting another sign of presence for Scotiabank Center.
The facility is owned by the city government but is operated by Trade Center Limited.
On June 25, 2014, it was announced that Scotiabank had won the naming rights for the facility and that the Metro Center would be renamed Scotiabank Center. The facility officer opened its doors as the rebranded Scotiabank Center on September 19, 2014.

Arena Information
The Scotiabank Center originally featured a full ring of bright orange seats around the playing surface, known as the "bottom bowl". It also has an incomplete "bowl top" on each side of the arena facing the rink (sides) with chairs of the same color. In the mid to late 1990s, there were many renovations to the arena, including the addition of 43 SkyBoxes and 11 "Executive Suites". The addition of SkyBoxes has since partially blurred the view for the person sitting high in the top bowl. Views of some or all of the ice surfaces from the top row of the seats are partially or completely blocked by the box. To help mitigate this problem, a video projection apparatus is installed that projects onto the exterior back wall of the box: If video recording is being produced for an event, then live feed from the video can be projected for the benefit of the people in an unobstructed part of the top bowl. Before the 2002-03 ice hockey season, in preparation for the Junior Ice Ice Hockey Championship, a new scoreboard and a "SilverVision" LED screen were added. The concourse arena displays photographs of various events that have taken place at Scotiabank Center, with one side showing entertainment and other sporting events. It currently has a seating capacity of 10,595 for ice hockey. The building is connected to the Halifax Link Downtown system.
