The American Curl is a type of cat characterized by unusual ears, which are curled back from the face toward the back of the skull. American Curl ears should be handled with care because rough handling can damage cartilage in the ear. This breed comes from Lakewood, California, as a result of spontaneous mutations.

History
The American Curls first appeared as an orphan at the door of the Rugas step in Lakewood, California in June 1981. The black woman, named Shulamith, gave birth to a cat with the same curved ears, and became the ancestor of all Americans Ikal today. In 1986, American Curl was exhibited at the cat show for the first time, and in 1992, the long-standing Curl American was awarded the status of the championship by The International Cat Association (TICA). In 1999, American Curl became the first breed to be received in the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) Championship Class with longhair and shorthair divisions.
American Curl is a medium-sized cat 5-10 pounds (2.3-4.5 kg), and does not reach maturity until the age of 2-3 years. Women should be between 5-8 pounds (2.3-3.6 kg) and men 7-10 pounds (3.2-4.5 kg). They are strong and healthy.
The American Curl's child was born with a straight ear, which began to curl up within forty-eight hours. After four months, their ears will not roll again, and must be hard and stiff when touched at the bottom of the ear with a flexible tip. The American quality of Curl may have an almost straight ear, but the showcase cat should have a curved ear forming an arc between 90 and 180 degrees. 90 degrees is preferred, but cats will be disqualified if their ears touch the back of their skulls.
Both long and short haired American Curls have a soft, smooth coat that lies flat with their bodies. They need small treatments and enjoy spending time with their owners.
The American Curl, while still a common breed, is found worldwide in the United States, Spain, France, Japan, Russia, and many other countries.

Health
Because of its large genetic pool with non-genealogical cats, American Curl is generally a healthy type. However, this cat's ears need to be cleaned frequently to prevent infection, and need gentle handling to prevent damage. Various marriages between the normal curly cat and the normal cat reveal the dominant inheritance of the curly genes. No sex-related distribution found. The mutant gene is defined as curly and denoted by Cu. Other mutations of ear pins are found in Scottish Fold cats. In this cat anomaly is rarely found when heterozygous, but in homozygous cats (FdFd), animals suffer from dysplasia of the lower extremities and the tail. So the question arises if the homozygous curl (CuCu) can also be affected by the defects of cartilage formation and bone abnormalities. But the CuCu cat surveillance for two years showed no signs of anomaly.
In popular culture
In Webcomic Achewood, the character of Ray Smuckles has claimed to be an American Curl.
