Rip Girls is the 2000 family drama Disney Channel Original Movie (DCOM), directed by Joyce Chopra and starring Camilla Belle as a teenage girl named Sydney. The flow of the film follows Sydney, his father and his wife, Elizabeth's stepmother, who came to an island in Hawaii, where they find a closer relationship to each other while struggling with ideas of change to the island. While on the island, Sydney looks for new friends and learns the truth about his deceased mother. The film premiered on the Disney Channel on April 22, 2000.

Plot
Sydney Miller is a 13-year-old girl who was born in Hawaii and moved at a young age after the death of her mother, whom she barely remembers. From his great aunt, Sydney inherited an abandoned Hawaiian plantation that had been used for five generations. Sydney, his father Ben, and stepmother Elizabeth left their home in Chicago to visit the plantation, known as the Makai. When Millers arrives, they meet with lawyer Bo Kauihou, who tells them that Sydney will inherit the plantation if he stays there for two weeks. Bo tries to keep his parents from selling the plantation, stating that the soil is still fertile enough to be used as a farm, though Ben is hesitant because he and Elizabeth have no farming experience. Although Bo wanted to preserve the estate, he told Millers that there was a question about the purchase of the property.
On the estate, Sydney finds an old photo of her mother and finds out that she used to surf. The next day, Sydney finds a surfboard with the word "Naniloa" written on it, then befriends a girl named Gia, who loves to surf. That night Sydney told her parents that she wanted to spend time with Gia on the beach the next day. Ben worries about Sydney going to the beach alone, but allows him to do so when he promises to just take pictures, without going near the water. When Ben, Elizabeth, and Bo met with the realtors, Sydney arrived on the beach with a Naniloa surfboard. Sydney was introduced to Gia's friends, including Kona, a boy who is an artist and skateboarder. Sydney admits that she does not know how to surf, so Gia taught her.
Later, Bo and the Millers meet with the sales agents to discuss the company's plans to build a resort on plantation property. Sydney is disappointed that the plan does not include the preservation of plantation buildings, built in 1912; the sales agent suggested that the main plantation house could be converted into a restaurant. They also told Sydney that everything was negotiable after he expressed disappointment over the company's plans to make the nearest beach available to hotel guests only.
While surfing, Sydney was swept away from surfboards and rescued by Kona. Sydney has a wound on his face and then wakes up in a beach house owned by Gia's mother, Malia, who has bandaged his wound. Malia told Sydney that Naniloa's Sydney surfboard, nicknamed Naniloa. Malia also said that she befriends the mother of Sydney. Malia was surprised to learn that Ben had never mentioned that friendship. Malia then took Sydney to the lagoon to observe its beauty; Malia tells him that it is a place where whales gather every year. Malia brings Sydney back to the plantation, and Ben becomes angry with Malia, believing that she encourages Sydney to surf. Malia questioned Ben's decision to withhold information from Sydney about his mother; he told Malia that he was trying to keep Sydney out of Hawaii and surfing to protect him, an idea that Malia did not agree on.
The next day, Sydney learns - from Gia - that her mother died in an accident. Sydney said his father had never discussed his mother's death and he never asked him about it. Sydney has Kona and Gia take him to Kaala Loa, an empty plantation, where he finds his mother's old bedroom. The Miller family accepted a new monetary offer for Makai, and Sydney had to choose whether to accept it. That night, the party is held at Kaala Loa, where Sydney and Kona share a kiss. While watching whales, Sydney learns from Malia that his mother died while surfing.
Gia's friends ignored Sydney after a newspaper article stated that the estate and the beach will be sold to the company, even though he has not made a decision yet. When Sydney told Gia that the company had promised to preserve the lagoon for whales, Gia told him that animals would no longer come with tourists. Gia admitted that at first, she was only friends with Sydney so she could persuade her to keep the estate and the beach, but she said that their friendship is authentic, which Sydney does not believe. After arguing, Sydney decided to sell the property. When Sydney was ready to sign the paperwork, he noticed Gia's friends outside and decided not to sell, instead choosing to stay in Makai. Sydney and Gia become friends again.

Reception
Mike Hughes of Gannett News Service considers Rip Girls "first-rate films using unknown actors," writes, "Many Disney Channel movies tend to be very empty, but these offer both beautiful exterior and solid core. "Ryan's team from Honolulu Star-Bulletin thought the movie was unrealistic. In June 2011, Stephan Lee of Entertainment Weekly wrote "it's much simpler than I remember, and the show is neat, unsolved, but it's still one of my favorites." In 2012, Tara Aquino of Complex rated the movie at number 12 on the magazine list of the 25 best Disney Channel Original Movies.
In December 2015, Jonathon Dornbush of Entertainment Weekly ranked Rip Girls 29th on the 30th Top Disney Channel Original movie list, writing that it feels like "fewer combinations "from the previous DCOM Brink! and Johnny Tsunami : "The film has its moments, with the young Camilla Belle at its center, but ends as a forgettable though still fun mishmash of the DCOM sports genre without staking a claim for itself. "In May 2016, Aubrey Page of Collider rated each DCOM released until then. The rank page Rip Girls is at number 54 and writes, "This one is definitely less than the sum of its parts, but it has a pretty solid little bobper beach playlist that still survives to this day."

In 2001, Camilla Belle and Stacie Hess received nominations at the 22nd Young Artist Awards, for Best Appearance in TV Movies (Drama), Leading Young Actress and Young Actress Support, respectively.
