Composition
"Carry On" has been called "a song of perseverance in difficult times", supported by a rock-anthem voice written in F major and compiled within 12/8. The song begins with Ruess singing with vague vocals, as he faces the potential for suicide. Ruess's quiet vocals were finally reinforced by chorus and band player Jack Antonoff who played guitar. The narrator sought refuge in the bar with his friends, who began contemplating the deaths of those close to them. Antonoff gave the guitar solo "Slash-type wailing" a short 20 seconds, which appeared for two and a half minutes into the song.
