History

The company started as a Los Angeles beauty inventory house with some exclusive products founded by Blaine Culver. The house chemist named Alberto, that's Alberto-Culver's name. Alberto-Culver was bought and reorganized in 1955 by Leonard H. Lavin who is an entrepreneur and producer representative for various other companies. The newly created company was later moved to Chicago and hundreds of other products were dropped and the company focused on the shampoo and hairdresser Alberto VO5. In 1958, Alberto VO5 Hairdressing became the number one brand in its category and still holds that position today. Lavin and his wife, Bernice, guided the company's growth until 1994 when they handed it over to second-generation generations. Until his death in 2017, Lavin remained the director of Alberto-Culver; her daughter Carol Lavin Bernick is the company's chief executive.

In 2006, the company sought to sell its salon distribution business, which included the shops of Sally Beauty Supply and Beauty Systems Group, to Regis Corporation. This then ended the agreement and on November 10, 2006, the shareholders chose to separate Sally Beauty.

The company's 2007 sales were reported at US $ 1.54 billion.

In October 2008, Alberto Culver announced that it has closed the transaction to obtain rights and trademarks worldwide for Noxzema skincare brand from Procter & amp; Gamble, which covers businesses that exist in the United States, Canada, and parts of Latin America. Procter & amp; Gamble will continue to operate existing Noxzema shaving treatments, antiperspirant/deodorant, body wash and body soap business in parts of Western Europe.

The UK headquarters is at Leatherhead, Unilever House and was in Chineham, Basingstoke, and the company owns a factory in Swansea, Wales, where all British products are produced and also for some European countries.

Acquisitions

Alberto-Culver was bought by British-Dutch consumer goods company Unilever on September 27, 2010 for US $ 3.7 billion. The terms of the acquisition required Unilever to then sell selected hair care brands and all its food businesses in the US to other companies to satisfy antitrust concerns (in the late 1990s, Unilever had bought Alberto-Culver's rival in Chicago, Helene Curtis). US food business bought by B & G Foods, and US rights over VO5, Rave, and Coast are sold to High Ridge Brands (Unilever owns this brand worldwide). With the reduction of American brands, Unilever closed the former plant of Alberto Culver in 2013, laid off 600 workers.
