Google Now is a Google Search feature that offers predictive cards with daily information and updates in Google apps for Android and iOS. Google Now proactively conveys information to users to predict (based on search habits and other factors) information they may need. Although the product no longer exists as Google Now, this functionality is still available in the Google app and its feeds.

It was first included in Android 4.1 ("Jelly Bean"), which was launched on July 9, 2012, and was first supported on Galaxy Nexus smartphones. This service is available for iOS on April 29, 2013, without most of its features. In 2014, Google adds Now cards to the notification center on Chrome OS and in the Chrome browser, but the notification center is then removed entirely from the Chrome browser. Popular Science named Google Now "Innovation of the Year" for 2012.

Since 2015, Google has gradually removed the reference to "Google Now" in the Google app, using "Now" mostly removed in October 2016, including replacing "Now cards" with "feeds". In Google I/O 2016, Google is showing off a new Google Assistant smart personal assistant, which resembles the evolution of Google Now. Unlike Google Now, however, the Assistant can engage in two-way dialogue with users.

Histori

At the end of 2011, reports emerged that Google increased its Google Voice Search product for the next version of Android. It was originally codenamed "Majel" after Majel Barrett, Gene Roddenberry's wife and computer system voice in the Star Trek franchise; it is also given the code name "assistant".

On June 27, 2012, Google Now was unveiled as part of the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean main demonstration in Google I/O 2012.

On October 29, 2012, Google Now received updates through the Google Play Store that brought in additional Gmail cards. Google Now displays cards with information retrieved from a user's Gmail account, such as flight information, package tracking information, hotel bookings, and restaurant reservations (as long as Gmail accounts are not Google Apps accounts). Other additions are movies, concerts, stocks and news cards based on user location and search history. Also includes the facility to create a calendar event using voice input, such as "Make a new appointment to have dinner with Steve next Thursday at 7 pm".

On December 5, 2012, updates for the Google Search app bring some new features to Google Now, including cards for nearby events, search by camera when at a museum or store, airline tickets found from email (United Airlines in the first example, more airlines follow). In addition, Google Now will display cards for weather for upcoming travel destinations, birthday reminders; and a summary of cycling activities and runs every month. New voice action features included with this update include the ability to post to Google, song recognition capabilities, and the ability to scan bar codes. However, when the Search 2.5 update was hit, Google removed the "Search With Camera" feature.

On March 21, 2013, Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt stated that Google had sent the iOS version of Google Now to Apple for review and that the app was awaiting approval, but he later said that this was not true after Apple was denied this was the case. However, on April 29, 2013, Google Now is available for iOS in the update for the Google Operating system search app.

Based on Google Chrome code review in December 2012, Google Now is expected to be integrated into the Google Chrome desktop version. According to Seth Rosenblatt of CNET, it is rumored that Google Now will also serve as a replacement for iGoogle in November 2013. On May 15, 2013, at Google I/O 2013, Google announces the upcoming Google Now launch on desktop platforms; This feature is only accessible through Google Chrome or Google Chrome OS. On January 16, 2014, the Google Now alpha version is available on desktop through Google Chrome Canary releases even though this app does not have some cards available on Google Now mobile versions like public warnings, nearby photos, activity and stock summaries. On March 24, 2014, Google began launching Google Now for Google Chrome users logged into their Google account in their browser.

Function

Google Now is applied as an aspect of the Google Search app. This recognizes user repeated actions on the device (common locations, recurring calendar appointments, search queries, etc.) to show more user-relevant information in the form of "cards". The system utilizes the Google Knowledge Graphics project, a system used to collect more detailed search results by analyzing their meaning and relationships.

The current special card consists of:

In January 2015, Google introduced the ability to participate, install third-party apps to generate cards; when launched, it includes apps like Airbnb, eBay, The Guardian , Pandora Radio, and Lyft amongst others.

Now in Tap

In Android 6.0 "Marshmallow", Google Now supports an additional feature known as "Now On Tap", which lets users search within the context of the information being displayed in the app. When a user activates a feature, by holding down the "Home" button or using voice commands, the entire text of the current screen is processed to search for keywords and other information (such as names of people, television programs and movies, etc.), which then used to produce cards that display information, suggestions, and actions related to the content. Users can also use voice commands to ask questions related to the subject of these cards.

Reception

Scott Webster of CNET praised Google Now for its ability to remind users of events based on history and check-ins in the past, and further praised it for providing "instant information in a clean and intuitive way" without being asked by users. A review by Ryan Paul from Ars Technica claims that like most other voice-activated apps, including Siri, voice recognition is a big issue, but notes that the ability to type in questions provides an alternative to users. Some commentators noted that Google Now's predictive power revealed "how much data and information Google has about routine [users] and everyday life." October 2014 review on Android Central shows Google Now beating its competitors, Siri and Cortana.
