He is best known for his ability to take wickets in a row, with yorkers swinging: he is the only bowler in the world who has two World Cup hat-tricks, the only bowler who has taken three hat-tricks in ODI and one- the only player to have taken four wickets in four consecutive balls in the form of any international cricket. Initial years
Malinga grew up in a simple state in Rathgama, a coastal village located 12 km northwest of Galle. He often plays cricket with friends in the sand bank and coconut grove on the riverbank in a cricket-obsessed village. His father, Separamadu Milton, is a retired bus mechanic working in the Galle depot. He has education in three schools, namely Mahinda College, Galle, Vidyaloka College, Galle and Vidyathilake Vidyalaya, Thiranagama. Malinga has a basic education in Vidyathilake Vidyalaya in Thiranagama, a school located near his village.
After passing the 5th Grade Scholarship exam in 1993, he entered Vidyaloka College, Galle for secondary education, where he started his cricket career. Here Malinga was discovered by a former Sri Lankan girlfriend, Champaka Ramanayake. Champaka, so impressed by Malinga's raw abilities, invited him to join the Galle Cricket Club. Champaka also helped him to join the first XI cricket team at Mahinda College, Galle. Joining Mahinda College was the turning point of his cricket career and he was assisted by some respectable Old boys. A brief attempt to make Malinga's actions more truthful leads to much reduced speed and declining accuracy. Malinga soon returned to his natural course successfully, and with great encouragement from Ramanayake.
