src: www.deseretnews.com

Laguna is a privately owned theme park in Farmington, Utah, United States, located about seventeen miles (27 km) north of Salt Lake City. It has ten roller coasters, five of which are unique; Colossus the Fire Dragon , the last Schwarzkopf Double Looping coaster still operates in the United States (Laser at Dorney Park closed at the end of the 2008 season and moved to Germany to become Teststrecke roller coaster traveling in 2009); Roller Coaster, one of the oldest coasters in the world operating since 1921; Evil, designed by the engineering department of Lagoon and Werner Stengel in collaboration with the Zierer ride manufacturer; BomBora, an in-house designed family coaster; and Cannibal, built in-house with one of the steepest drops in the world.

The lagoon is divided into five main areas: The Midway , which contains most of the rides and various types of carnival games and food outlets; Pioneer Village which has several exhibits featuring pioneer buildings and artifacts; Lagoon-A-Beach , a water park that is included in the price of a regular admission ticket; Kiddie Land with multiple rides for small children, and X-Venture Zone featuring more extreme rides at an additional cost. Lagoon also offers RV parking, a well-equipped garden and a shady walk outside the park that stays open all year round.

Histori

1886-1940

In 1886, The Denver & amp; Rio Grande Western Railroad builds a resort on the shores of the Great Salt Lake. It's called the Lake Garden, and is one of the few resorts built along the lakes throughout the 1800s. For years, the lake level receded drastically until Lake Park was away from the lake and closed at the end of the 1895 season.

Simon Bamberger, who built Salt Lake & amp; Ogden Railroad from Salt Lake City to Ogden, Utah, is Lake Park's vice president and 25% owner. To increase passenger traffic on track, he bought most of the original Lake Garden buildings from D & amp; RGW and move it about 3 miles (5 km) east near Farmington, Utah. It gives residents of Salt Lake City (and later, Ogden) a reason to travel through "Bamberger." The resort is named after the Lagoon for a small body of water located on the original forty acres (162,000 mÃ,²). The original lagoon is used to harvest ice in the winter; Bamberger has magnified it to 9 acres (36,000 m 2 ) by cleaning some swamps.

Lagoon opened in Farmington, Utah on July 12, 1896, and included "Bowling, Elegant Pavillion Dancing, Good Music, A Shady Bowery and Good Restaurants." In 1899, Shoot-the-Chutes, the first thriller rides in the park, were added. In 1900, guests began swimming and rowing boats in Lagoon Lake. Over time more rides are added, such as authentic Herschell-Spillman Carousel and Cagney 12 in ( 305Ã, mm ) miniature gauge Miniature Railroad. In 1901, the park hosted a small league baseball team in the Inter-Mountain League

In 2003 the Lagoon celebrated the 110th anniversary of hand carved carvings built in 1893 and purchased by the Lagoon in 1906. The carousel consists of 47 animals including: chickens, geese, slugs, lions, tigers, frogs in shorts and bow ties - cousins, sea dragons, long-horned goats, zebra without saddles, storks, and giraffes. In 1953 when the Roller Coaster "White" burned, (owner) Robert Freed went down and sprayed a carousel with water to protect the carved statues of his hand.

One of the most popular rides today is the famous wooden roller coaster in the Lagoon. Designed by John Miller of Coney Island fame; it was built in 1921. Miller gave a lot of rolls and lunar coil. The highest altitude is fifty-seven feet, and the length of the track is 2,000 five hundred feet. The journey lasts just under two minutes and the coaster train reaches speeds up to 45 mph (72 km/h). It's locally known as "White Roller Coaster" because it's white wash paint. Little, if any, Roller Coaster is still white, however, since as timber backing is regularly replaced, the remaining new support is not painted.

In 1927, 1.5 million United States swimming pools (5,678 mÃ,³) with "drinkable water" was built north of Lake Laguna. It was one of the first pools filtered in the west, and is a cleaner alternative than swimming in the salty Great Salt Lake.

The 1920s and 1930s were popular years in the Lagoon. There was gambling and racing there in the 1920s, but the Utah State Legislature stopped him only a few years after it started. The first Fun House was built in 1929, along with many central shows, rides, and other games. During the era of "Big Band" Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Glenn Miller played Lagoon.

1940-1970

The park was closed for three seasons during World War II. In 1946 the park was in poor condition and on the verge of permanent closure. The Bamberger family is considered poisonous. However, Ranch S. Kimball and Robert E. Freed, saw tremendous opportunities, convincing the Bamberger family to rent the park to the newly formed Utah Amusement Corporation. Ranch Kimball served as President with Bob Freed as Secretary and Assistant Manager. (The Lagoon Corporation The Freed Family purchased the resort directly from the Bamberger family in 1983.)

When Utah Amusement Corporation took over Laguna rents, Farmington city regulations prohibit African Americans from using pools and ballrooms. In the late 1940s, Robert Freed had fully opened Laguna to the black community, and further extending this policy to the Ballroom Terrace (formerly Taman Pelangi) in Salt Lake City.

The Freed family made several improvements, including the installation of a new dressing room and the general repairs of the swimming pool in 1949, a delightful rebuilt house and the introduction of the "Dodgem Car" and the diesel miniature "Lakeshore Express" in 1951, and the new Ferris wheel in the year 1953.

In November 1953, a fire destroyed many parks, including a pleasant house, a dance pavilion and a roller coaster front. It was soon rebuilt to open for the next season and began to outperform the popularity of its main rival, Saltair. Many rides are restored, rebuilt, or replaced, and some new rides are added. In 1956, Mother Gooseland, the first Lagoon themed area, opened between Midway and the pool. It displays rides just for kids.

From the mid-1950s to the 1960s, Laguna made many improvements. A showboat was added to the lake, and a delightful new home was built, featuring attractions such as massive multi-lane slides; labyrinth, mirrors, obstacles and mystery space; a large turntable that threw the rider at high speed; barrel spin; and air jets everywhere - activated by human operators - that shocked those unfortunate enough to stand on top of them. There was also a mini car that was added in 1960, followed by "Space Scrambler," spook house, I.Q. Zoos and shooting galleries in 1961. The first Wild Mouse trip came in 1965. At Midway, musical groups including Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, Kingston Trio and Johnny Cash drew crowds to the stage.

The Beach Boys called this park in their song "Salt Lake City" on their 1965 Summer Days (And Summer Nights!) Album. Rolling Stones Concert at Lagoon in July 1966.

Narrow gauge 2Ã, ft ( 610Ã, mm ) Animaland Train began circling Lagoon Lake in 1967. In 1975, the original steam locomotive founded by Crown Metal Products was built 4-4-0. operating around the lake and its name was changed to the Wild Kingdom Train.

1970-1997

Opera House Square style turn of the century opened in 1968 and features melodrama, musical and silent film. In 1976, Laguna expanded east by buying Pioneer Village, an old town complete with several historic buildings that had been collected and showcased in the Sugar House area of Salt Lake City since 1953. The buildings were moved to the Lagoon and 2Ã, ft ( 610Ã, mm ) Narrow size "Pioneer Village Railroad" (featuring "Old Ironsides," Crown Metal Products locomotive 4-4-0) surrounds the city. There is also a "Lagoon Miniature Railroad," which circles around the Pioneer Village residential area using the original miniature 12Ã, in ( 305Ã, mm ) steam locomotives obtained in the early 1900s. A log flume trip was taken from Pixieland Park that died in Oregon.

One of the most popular rides in the Lagoon is even currently added in 1976, Jet Star 2. Before Lagoon bought Jet Star 2, it was one of the attractions in Spokane Washington's Expo '74.

Colossus the Fire Dragon came to the Lagoon in 1983, to a large crowd and great reviews as voted by People Magazine in 1984 as one of the 10 best coaster rides in the country. Fire Dragon is the first Lagoon coaster to feature inversions, with a top speed of 55 mph (89 km/h). With a double inverted loop, Colossus holds the distinction as a coaster in the Lagoon with the most inversion for 32 years. Cannibal, built in 2015, currently has the most inversions.

In the late 1980s, both the famous old house and "Haunted Shack", the fear attraction attraction, were closed, the victims increased maintenance costs, security issues and increased risk of litigation. The famous swimming pool closed after the fifth decade in 1987. This made way for the $ 5.5 million Laguna-A-Beach that was completed in 1989. Its construction spelled the end of a small-scale rail operation in Pioneer Village, as some of the favorites standing on the track track.

Unfortunately on April 30, 1989, Ryan Douglas Beckstead was killed in the journey of "Puff the Little Fire Dragon". He was six years old at the time of his death. Ryan apparently thought his turn on the journey had ended and stood up, trying to get out of his seat. A female operator reportedly asked, "Do you want to go next time?" Roughly at the same time, Ryan had "one foot in and one leg out" from the last car and tried to get back to the car as the car began to move up a slope. He fell from the back car, slipping down the tracks. The nearest parent started yelling at the operator to stop the trip. When the trip made a 10 to 12 second return to Ryan station, he tried to climb through the tracks when his front car hit him. Two siblings remain in the car where the boy is and is not hurt. He is buried at Bountiful Memorial Park.

Only about 7 weeks later, there was another death at Lagoon Amusement Park, in Roller coaster, or some people call it "white roller coaster". On June 9, 1989, Kilee King fell to his death after being expelled from a roller coaster. He stands in a weird corner trying to "get some air." He was then thrown onto the track in front of him and beaten by a roller coaster. He fell 35 feet to his death. He is buried at Bountiful Memorial Park. He also has a warning on the South Davis Junior High campus.

Controversy

In 2012, Laguna became the focus of protest of animal welfare groups who called for a boycott of parks, citing a USDA inspection report suggesting poor animal care in the Wild Kingdom. The Utah Animals Rights Coatition and PETA pointed out USDA citations for a span of 15 years that included insufficient unexplained living space and animal deaths. While acknowledging some of the problems, a spokeswoman for Lagoon denied any abuse occurred and said the veterinarian and staff regularly monitor the animals.

Zona X-Venture

In 1995, the Skycoaster tower was erected on North Midway and marked the beginning of what would become the X-Venture Zone. (The Sky coaster was previously owned by Midway West and traveled by carnival.) Then the Peak Eliminator, Double Thunder Raceway, and The Catapult will all be part of the X-Venture Zone. This rides are not included in Lagoon Passports throughout the day and require additional fees to go up.

  • Skycoaster: Skycoaster Lagoon opened during the 1995 season. Lagoon is one of the first amusement parks in the United States to add Skycoaster to its collection of rides. This is also the first of five rides to be included in the X-Venture Zone. The launch tower is 153 feet (47 m) high and the main arch is 173 feet (53 m) high. The leaflets, up to 3 at a time, are raised to a height of 143 feet (44 m). When they were instructed to do so, one leaflet pulled the rip cable and then the flyer fell quickly, reaching speeds of up to 80 miles per hour (130 km/h) and experiencing a similar sensation to a gantole and skydiving.
  • Top Eliminator: In 1996 Lagoon added Top Eliminator to the park. The rider can simulate a drag race down a four-lane racing track complete with a "Christmas tree" countdown lamp. The journey cost $ 1.2 million and the opening is delayed by about 3 months due to software interruption. The attraction opened for the 1996 season at the end of August. The rider can reach speeds of up to 75 miles per hour (121 km/h) in 2.8 seconds. Lagoon is the second amusement park to receive this rides. The Kentucky kingdom is the first. Attraction has been removed in 2011; Kanibal was founded on the site.
  • Double Thunder Raceway: Double Thunder Raceway, an elaborate go-cart journey, opened early in the 2000 season. Go-cart consists of two separate tracks; Lightning at 1,146 feet (349 m) and Thunder at 1,142 feet (348 m). Each track has 28 go-carts and features multiple sweeping, overpass, 360 degree spirals, straight-aways, and camelbacks. At the time this attraction is opened, go-cart drivers must be at least 54 "tall, Lagoon's highest limit, and passengers should be at least 46" tall. Guests must be at least 50 "tall for driving, or 40" high for a ride only. The journey lasts for 5 minutes, and the go-cart is equipped with remote control security system, speed control device speed, and traffic signal light to show track status.
  • Catapult: Catapult, the latest X-Venture Zone vehicle, was installed in 2002. Released two passengers in up to 250 feet (76 m) in air. This is supported by an additional spring that exerts a maximum appeal of 80,000 pounds of style. The tower is 196 feet (60 m) tall. A spokeswoman for Laguna said that this is probably the most thrilling ride of the Lagoon, as there are feelings without a strong load on the way, some twists and oscillations. This trip also has a TV screen so visitors can enjoy the park or friends riders can see the reaction of the rider while the vehicle is operating. Cassettes made can be purchased at the gift table. Riders are tied in capsule seats with full harness curlers with overlocking mechanisms for safety and comfort. The capsule also features a video camera and a microphone with remote broadcasting capabilities to deliver rider videos to monitors in the field.
