There is more than one frizz definition. Researchers studying hair health perceptions found that while women around the world consider the absence of curly hair as a sign of healthy hair, how they describe "curling" varies widely according to the type of hair and desired style. As described by the women in this study, the two main types of frizz are:

  1. a short strand attached to the part and along the length of hair "projecting away from the main part of the hair"; this type is especially noticeable in women with straight hair who try to achieve a subtle style; and
  2. strands of wavy or curly hair that are not parallel to the other to form a specified wave or curl.

By this definition, tangled hair is not merely characteristic of curly hair; straight hair can be curly, and curly or afro-textured hair can be free of curls. "Curls" sometimes refers to curly hair in general, but that's not what most women would understand with that term.

Cause

According to cosmetic chemist Randy Schueller, the three main causes of wrinkles are genetics, damage, and moisture.

Genetics

Some wavy or curly hairs naturally align or "clump" in a clear and consistent pattern, and some do not. Curly hair that has no natural curling definition looks curly and is sometimes mistakenly marked as broken.

Even when the hair has a specified curling pattern, combing or brushing it when it is dry can break the blob, causing the hair to expand into a curly mass. This is often done intentionally to increase the volume. Drying the hair from the tip toward the root can lift the hair cuticle, producing curls.

Damage

Although all hair is technically "dead", the damaged hair is considered less "healthy" than the undamaged hair. Some hair styling techniques can cause damage, hair cuticle clutches, and other forms of damage that contribute to curling.

Excessive or rough brushing can cause damage. This results in tangled hair because the hair is stretched from the shape before it breaks, resulting in short hair that tends to remain outward, away from the main hair. Backcombing can be damaging, as can combing curly hair when dry. The use of excessive styling devices such as blow dryers and flatirons can weaken hair, making it vulnerable to breaking and branching. Recommendations to minimize heat damage include using a low-temperature heat styling tool, using a diffuser when blow drying, and never using curling iron or flat iron on wet hair. Direct heat can boil water in the hair, causing bubbles to form inside the hair fiber, weakening the hair. Some authors suggest to avoid the heat altogether, and let the hair dry out.

Other common causes of hair damage include the use of a relaxer and other harsh chemicals; using a razor to cut curly hair, which weakens the hair cuticle and improves curling; and a hard shampoo that strips the hair of natural oil.

Having some hair that is shorter than the other is not always a sign of damage. Hair sheds naturally as it reaches the end of its growth cycle, and new hair grows in place; the average age is about six years.

Humidity

In a humid environment, moisture penetrates the hair shaft and is absorbed into the cortex, causing the protein there to swell. Different types of proteins absorb moisture and swell differently, causing the hair shaft to twist and bend in irregular patterns. To prevent this, Schueller recommends the use of a conditioner and a structuring product containing dimethicone, which reduces moisture.

Although moisture causes curling, which many women consider "unhealthy", many women also believe that moisture is good for their hair, and buy hair moisturizing products. In fact, this product is designed to smooth the hair surface rather than increasing the hair water content.

Perception and treatment

Curly hair has been felt differently in different eras and cultures. Publicity photos from silent film star Mary Pickford are often given backlights, highlighting the tap circle, and the curling that often became the mainstay of Western fashion in the 1980s. In the 1979 movie My Brilliant Career, when the curly-haired Sybylla threatened to cut off all her hair, her aunt Gussie replied, "Too bad losing your best asset." Today, some people embrace their natural curling, while others see it as a problem that requires a solution, and ads for hair products often present it that way.

Those looking for ways to reduce curling face a lot of conflicting information online and in the media. Products and treatments that work well for one person may not work for another because of factors such as curl patterns, hair density, hair porosity, the amount of sebum produced, whether the individual strands are coarse or fine, the protein level (which is influenced by one's diet ), allergic to certain ingredients, moisture level of the area, and finally, the subjective ideals of beauty. In addition, some methods used to smooth curling can cause damage, making hair more prone to wrinkles than before; for example, flatirons can burn hair (see Damage, above), and some hair gel contains dry ingredients. Some experts recommend the use of products containing silicone, while others warn that silicon can cause buildup. Products such as serum, pomade, and hair wax are designed to reduce curling, and each has its supporters and critics.

Some of the relatively uncontroversial recommendations to reduce doubt include the regular use of instant, deep, and leave-in conditioners; occasional hot oil treatment; and ordinary trim to remove branched ends or damaged ends.
