Etymology

The word "broom" comes from the name of certain thorny shrubs ( Genista and others) used for sweeping. The name of the bush began to be used for household appliances in Central England End and gradually replaced previous besom during the period of Early Modern English. The song Buy Broom Buzzems (by William Purvis 1752-1832) still refers to "broomstick" as one type of besom (ie "besom made of brooms").

A flat broom, made of broom of corn, was created by Shaker in the 19th century with the invention of a broom representative.

Small brooms or brushes are sometimes called duster.

Producing

In 1797, broom quality changed when Levi Dickenson, a farmer in Hadley, Massachusetts, made a broom for his wife, using the tassels of sorghum, the grain he developed for his seed. His wife spread good words around the city, creating a request for Dickenson's sorghum broom. The broom of sorghum lifted up well, but eventually, like all brooms, was a mess. Dickenson then created a machine that would make a better broom, and faster than he could. In 1810, a pedal foot broom machine was discovered. This machine played an integral part in the Industrial Revolution.

In Swaziland, the witch's broom is a lump of short stick tied with no handle.

United States

One source mentions that the United States had 303 broom plants in 1839 and that number reached 1,039 in 1919. Most were in the Eastern United States; during the Great Depression of the 1930s, the number of factories declined to 320 in 1939. The state of Oklahoma became a major center for broom production because the corn broom grew very well there, with The Oklahoma Broom Corn Company opening a factory in El Reno in 1906. Faced with competition from imported brooms and synthetic fur, most of the factories closed in the 1960s.

Magic

In the context of magic, brooms tend to refer to the broom as a whole, known as besom . The first known reference to the witch flying on a broomstick dates from 1453, which was recognized by the male wizard Guillaume Edelin. The concept of flying ointment used by magicians appeared at almost the same time, recorded in 1456.

In the 1939 film Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, , Wicked Witch of the West uses a broomstick over Oz. He also uses it to write "Surrender Dorothy" over Emerald City. The Witch orders Dorothy and his three traveling companions to bring Wicked Witch's broomstick to him to grant their wishes. Dorothy takes her to the Wizard with Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion after Wicked Witch's death.

In the Disney movie 1940 Fantasia , Mickey Mouse, playing The Sorcerer's Apprentice, brings a broom to life to do his job filling a well full of water. The broom overcame his work and when cut into pieces, each splinter became a new broom that flooded the room until Yen Sid stopped him. The story is derived from a poem by Goethe entitled Der Zauberlehrling ("The Sorcerer's Apprentice"). The broom of Disney has a brilliant acting repeated in the Disney media, mostly described as janitor, though not out of control or causing such chaos in its original appearance.

This flight is also available at Bedknobs and Broomsticks and Hocus Pocus .

The flying broom plays an important role in the fantasy world of Harry Potter, used for transportation as well as for playing the popular Quidditch air game. Broomsticks, along with Fly carpets, are the main means of transportation in the world of Operation Chaos Poul Anderson.

The Flying Broom (Turkish: UÃÆ'§an SÃÆ'¼pÃÆ'¼rge ) is a feminist organization in Turkey, deliberately generating the Fly Sweep association with wizards.

In the broader culture

  • The Canadians MÃÆ'Â tis have a tradition of broom dancing. There is a dance broom show where people show off their broom dancing skills. A live broom dance involves fast footwork and jumping.
  • "Jumping brooms" is an African-American marriage tradition that originated in the marriage of slaves in the United States in the 19th century. The revived popularity among African Americans is due to the 1976 novel Roots: The Saga of an American Family.
  • During World War II, the American submarine crew would lift a broom into their front truck when they returned to the harbor to show that they had "swept" the clean sea from enemy voyages. This tradition has been underestimated in recent years by submariners who flew brooms only when returning from their cruise ships. This tradition undoubtedly stems from the Dutch admiral action of Maarten Tromp which binds the broom to its main post after defeating British admiral Robert Blake at the Battle of Hunger in 1652. This is often interpreted as a message that he will "sweep the English from the sea". This story remains unproven, but it may stem from the tradition of lifting a broom as a sign that a ship is sold, which seems more likely as Tromp has captured two Blake ships in battle.

Literature

  • In 1701 Jonathan Swift wrote "Meditation Upon a Broomstick", a parody of Robert Boyle Occasional Reflections on Some Subjects:

But the Broom-Stick, you might say, is the Tree Symbol that stands above his Head; and praying what a Man is, but the Comedy-in-Ground Creature, His Animal Faculty is constantly riding on its Rationale; His head where his heels should be, condescending on Earth, yet with all his faults, he sets out to be the universal Reformer and the Harassment Corrector, the Removal of Complaints, the rake into each Sluts Corner of Nature, bringing Hidden Corruption to the Light, Big dust where none before, share in all the time, in the same pollution he pretends to sweep: His last days are spent in Slavery to Women, and generally the most inappropriate; until worn to a stump, like his brother Bezom, he either kickt out the door, or used to light a fire, for others to warm himself.

  • The poet uses a broom in metaphor making. In Emily Dickinson's poem, Mother Nature , Nature "... sweeps with many colored brooms, and leaves splinters behind..."
  • In J.K. Rowling's novels and film adaptations, broomsticks are a common form of transportation for witches and witches in England. It's also used for Quidditch's magical sports, in which players use their flying broomsticks to fly around the field and shoot at targets.

Politics

It is used as a symbol of the following political parties:

  • Aam Aadmi Party, India
  • All Progressive Congresses, Nigeria

Religion

  • In the Gospel of Luke 15: 8 ("Parable of the Lost Coin"), sweeping is mentioned, using a verb related to the word for a broom: "Suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses Does she not turn on the lights , sweep the house and look carefully until he finds it? "
  • "I will sweep away with destruction" Isaiah 14:23
  • In Jainism, monks and nuns have a small broom with them, to gently remove ants and small animals, to avoid destroying them. This is part of observing the principle of Ahi? .

Sports

  • Curling brooms
  • In baseball, when the home team is close to reaching a sweep (after winning the first two games of the three-game series or the first three games of the four-game series), some fans will bring a broom to the baseball stadium and swing it as a way of mocking the visitors : Arkansas vs LSU, 2011; Red Sox vs. Yankees, 13-15 May 2011 and 7-9 June 2011).
  • In broomball, broomsticks have been removed and used to push the ball into the goal, on the ice surface. This game is similar to hockey, unless the player does not wear roller skates.
