Alis Rowe is a British entrepreneur and author who writes about Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). In 2013, she founded The Curly Hair Project, a social enterprise dedicated to supporting women and girls with ASD. Alis has Asperger's Syndrome and writes and speaks about life as a female on the spectrum, with an aim to help both individuals who are autistic and their non-autistic ('neurotypical') loved ones.

Early life and education

Rowe was born and raised in London, England and earned a 1st class degree and masters in Chemistry. She has described her time in secondary school as a dark period in her life experiencing severe depression and social anxiety. Rowe was diagnosed with autism in her early twenties.

Career

Rowe started The Curly Hair Project in 2013 to educate and support those with ASD and those without through blogs, posters, social media, books, videos, apps, podcasts, seminars and workshops. Her autobiographical Asperger's and Me was released in 2013 and describes her experiences and challenges living prior to her diagnosis. She has since written over eight more books.

Rowe regularly hosts workshops and talks on panels and at conferences around the United Kingdom. She has received awards for her work, including the Temple Grandin Award and the Do It Award in 2014. She has been featured as an Asperger's expert by organizations such as the National Autistic Society and Aukids Magazine. In 2015, she was featured in Marie Claire (UK). In 2016, she was profiled in Healthy Magazine.

Personal life

In 2010, Rowe started Olympic weightlifting. Training 6-7 days a week, she touts it as an exercise in which she can "logically see progress" and finds it mentally rewarding. In 2016, she was profiled in Your Autism Magazine.
